Definitions
- THIS INVENTION relates to a collapsible and folding accommodation unit which is transportable and lightweight in construction so that it can be erected •quickly and easily to provide semi-permanent relief accommodation, for example, in disaster areas where more conventional habitation is temporarily unavailable.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a collapsible accommodation unit which may be readily transported in large numbers to areas of need, and can be erected easily and quickly by limited numbers of personnel.
- a collapsible accommodation unit comprising a floor, at least two side walls and a roof, the side walls being pivotable between a collapsed condition in which they lie flat between the floor and the roof, and an upright position upstanding from the floor to support the roof at an elevated height and said walls including at least one door, characterised in that a first pair of opposed side walls are hingedly attached to and between the floor and the roof and are articulated about horizontal fold lines so that they may be folded inwards between the floor and the roof, in that a second pair of opposed side walls or support members is hingedly attached to the floor alone; and in that the roof has a peripheral depending rim providing an open-bottom box in which the side walls are contained in the collapsed condition of the unit.
- Fig. 1 is an isometric front view of a collapsible accommodation unit made in accordance with the invention and shown in its erected condition ready for use;
- Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the unit in its collapsed condition as delivered to site;
- Figs. 3 and 4 are front elevations of the unit in partly erected condition
- Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken along line V-V of Fig. 4;
- Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken along line VI-VI of Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 7 is a horizontal section taken along line VII-VII of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken along line 'VIII-VIII of Fig. 1 ;
- Fig. 9 is an elevation of a part of the unit as depicted in Fig. 8.
- Fig. 10 is an isometric view from above the unit showing a method of interconnection of multiple units to provide further accommodation.
- the unit essentially comprises a floor 10 and roof 11 separated in the erected condition by a first pair of opposed side walls 12 and a second pair of opposed side walls 13.
- the side walls 13 there may be provided one or more windows and a door.
- the various components of the unit are constructed from an aluminium framework surrounding lightweight, preferably heat insulating, panels.
- the unit will be delivered to site in the folded condition as illustrated in Fig. 2.
- the roof 11 is then lifted as depicted by arrow 14, and as can be seen particularly in Figs. 1 and 3 the first pair of side walls 12 are hingedly attached to and between the floor 10 and roof 11 and are articulated about horizontal hinges or fold lines 15 such that the roof may remain parallel to the floor as it is lifted and as the walls 12 unfold.
- the unit has reached its full height as illustrated in Fig. 4 whereupon the other opposed pair of side walls 13 which are hinged respectively at their lower ends to two opposed ends of the floor are raised as illustrated in Fig. 5 into a vertical position.
- the walls 13 are locked into their vertical positions whereupon the unit is fully erected and ready for use. No tools are required, and the time taken to complete the erection process is in the region of 1 minute or less.
- the roof 11 has a peripheral depending rim 16 which serves to enclose the upper hinged edges of walls 12 and the upper free edges of walls 13 when the unit is built thus preventing the ingress of rainwater, and also to enclose the entire assembly of wall panels in the collapsed condition as shown in Fig. 2.
- the rigidity of the entire of structure is dependent largely upon the open-bottom box formation of the roof 11. It will be seen also that the floor 10 is similarly shaped on at least two sides.
- FIG. 6 the structure of the side walls is illustrated by example with reference to one of the side walls 12 as comprising an aluminium frame 17 of rectangular cross-section and surrounding a panel 18 of insulating material 19 such as closed cell plastics foam, sandwiched between a pair of thin aluminium or glass reinforced plastics outer sheets 20.
- the outer sheets 20 are preferably painted with a suitable exterior quality paint to prevent deterioration from weather conditions.
- Rivetted at 21 to the forward and rearward ends of side walls 12 is an aluminium angle member 22 which inter- engages upon erection of the unit with a similar member 23 rivetted at 24 to the adjacent side edge of front and rear walls 13.
- a weather resistant interlok is provided between the adjacent side edges of the walls.
- the front and rear walls consist of an extruded aluminium edge section 25 alongside panels 26 of similar construction to panels 18.
- Refe rr ing now to Fig. 7 at the inne r edges of panels 26 there are further extruded aluminium sections 27 and 28 the latter enaging with in a channel section 29 to which one part of a hinge 30 is attached.
- the other part of the hinge is attached to a channel section 31 serving as a f ramework for a door 32, again of similar construction to panel 1 8.
- a latch mechanism with a spr ing-loaded latch 33 which as the wall 1 3 is raised between walls 12 engages automatically within a recess 34 on the underside of roof 1 1 , a latch plate 35 providing the correct location f or the latch 33. Pivotally attached to the latch 33 i s a handle 36. When wall 1 3 i s to be lowe red to its collapsed position handle 36 is raised to drop latch 33 clear of latch plate 35. A pair of such latch mechanism is provided near the respective ends of the upper edge of each wall 13.
- light and ventilation for the unit may be provided by windows such as are illustrated at 37 in Fig. 1 . These may be provided in any or all of the walls , and indeed the roof 1 1 may include a translucent panel.
- two or more such units may be linked together using channel strips 38 and 39 which engage in suitable recesses provided in side edge support members such as edge sections 25 (see Fig. 6).
- the strips 38 and 39 may be held in position by a friction fit or alternatively may be screwed or rivetted in place. In this way, many units may be built up to provide multiple accommodation and to divide the accommodation into separate rooms.
- fixed loops 40 may be attached at spaced positions around the outside edge of the floor to enable the unit to be anchored to the site by ground- engaging devices. During delivery to the site however such loops will serve as hand-holds or means for attachment of lifting gear.
- each unit in itself is of lightweight construction and easily manoeuvred by two or four persons, the compact nature of the units when collapsed enables many such units to be stacked for transporting to site.
- the units are readily collapsed so that after use they may be transported for re-use elsewhere.
