Definitions

  • THIS INVENTION relates to a sealing arrangement for adhesive dispensers and, more particularly, an arrangement for sealing adhesive dispensers without the use of rubber o- rings.
  • the sealing is carried out by first inserting a plug into the open end of the barrel of the dispenser after the barrel has been charged with produce, the plug having a rubber o-ring co-operating with the internal wall of the barrel to seal the adhesive within the dispenser from the atmosphere outside the plug. Mechanical pins are then forced between the rubber o-ring of the plug and the internal wall of the barrel. Any air trapped between the adhesive or resin and the plug is bled from around the sides of the rubber o-ring which recovers its full sealing capability once the pins are withdrawn.
  • a further disadvantage of the above prior art methods is that it is difficult to ascertain when all the air trapped between the adhesives or resin and the sealing plug in the barrel has been removed. With many adhesives or resins it is imperative to remove all the air in order to stop the adhesive or resin from reacting with the air and undergoing an irreversible transformation.
  • the present invention aims to overcome or at least mitigate the above problems presented by the prior art by providing a sealing arrangement which will not damage the internal wall of the dispenser barrel and does not react with an adhesive or resin within the dispenser.
  • the invention provides a sealing arrangement for sealing a dispenser having a cylindrical barrel with an open charging end through which a flowable product is introduced into the dispenser, which arrangement comprises a plug for inserting into the barrel after introduction of the product and formed with a bleed aperture through which air trapped between the plug and the product escapes, and a stopper engagable with the plug to seal the aperture in the plug without forcing air back through the plug and without allowing the contents of the dispenser to escape.
  • a method of sealing a dispenser having a cylindrical barrel with an open charging end through which a flowable product is introduced into the dispenser comprising the steps of introducing into the open end of the barrel a sealing plug with a bleed aperture through which the air trapped between the plug and the product escapes, and engaging a stopper with the plug so that no air is forced back through the plug and no product escapes through the plug, and locking the second sealing member in engagement with the first sealing member.
  • an apparatus for introducing a sealing arrangement as described above into a dispenser having an open charging end through which a flowable product is introduced into the dispenser comprises: means for storing sealing arrangements to be inserted into successive dispensers; means for supplying a charged dispenser to a capping station of the apparatus and for supporting the dispenser in the capping station; means for feeding a sealing arrangement from the storing means to the open charging end of the dispenser; means for inserting the plug of the sealing arrangement into the dispenser, and means for engaging the stopper of the sealing arrangement after insertion of the plug in the dispenser.
