Abstract

An input signal (ES) is converted to a 20-bit output value (AW) in exponential form. To this end, a first multiplying digital/analog converter (MDAC1) is used, by means of an exponential value (EW), as a digitally controlled amplifier of a scanning signal (AS) derived from the input signal (ES). The exponential value (EW) is produced during scanning of the input signal (ES) and used to continuously control the amplification stage. The exponential value (EW) is an approximation to the scanning signal (AS) and forms the exponent of the output value (AW). It is fed to an output memory (OL) together with the mantissa value (MW) derived from the scanning signal (AS).
