Definitions
- the invention consists of a mast and sail with a linked pivot at or near the heel of the mast, connected to a swivel fitting at the base of the mast so that the mast can rotate about its long axis.
- the two shrouds and forestay are controlled by winches, or other mechanical means, so that the mast and sail(s) can readily be tilted from side to side and backwards and forwards about the linked pivot at the heel of the mast, as required.
- the CE of the sail(s) and the direction of the vector(s) through the CE(s) can be manipulated in a similar manner to that used by sailboarders.
- mast and sail(s) can be tilted to windward.
- FIG. 1 Apparatus for Side to Side and Fore and Aft Movement of Mast and Sail(s).
- the following description refers to figure 1 in the attached drawings. This drawing has been sketched from a small, 2 person, working prototype developed during 1988, using a catamaran hull configuration, with some minor modifications to clarify presentation.
- the mast 1 is stepped on a central strong point 2 via a linked swivel 3, bolted 4 inside the lower mast extension 5.
- This mast extension 5 is fitted with suitably shaped packing 6 and through bolted 7 inside the lower end of the mast 1.
- the linked swivel 3 has two moving parts: the linkage and the swivel.
- the linkage permits the mast to tilt backwards and forwards as well as side to side, and the swivel permits the mast to rotate about its long axis. Rotation of the mast is controlled by the orientation of sail and boon.
- the top part of the mast 1 is fitted with a mast tang 8 with an eye projecting from the leading edge of the mast, and this eye is loosely fitted with a large shackle 9. This large shackle 9 passes through the spliced eye at the top end of the forestay 10 and the top holes in the spreader plate 11.
- the spreader plate 11 prevents the top shroud swivel blocks 12, 13 from fouling on the mast 1.
- the lower ends of the top shrouds 21, 22 terminate in eyes 23, 24. Between the eyes 23, 24 and the lower shroud tackle blocks 27, 28 there is a tensioning tackle 25, 26 on each shroud to tension up the rig.
- aft winch 29 which is fitted with two drums 30, 31 keyed to the same axis and jam cleats (not shown) to prevent the winch turning and rope slippage when the winch is not being used.
- the top winch drum 30 drives a rope 32, 37.
- One part of this rope 32 passes through a block 33 attached to the starboard shroud anchorage point 34 by a shackle 35.
- This part of the rope 32 then passes through the starboard lower shroud tackle block 27 and is tied off to a ring 36 attached to the shackle 35.
- the other part of the rope 37 driven by the top drum 30 is led forward on the starboard side, via a block 38, so that the rope clears the forward winch and mast step arrangements, to a swivel block 39 which is shackled 40 to the forestay anchorage point 41.
- this part of the rope 37 passes over one sheave of the double tackle block 42 and is tied off at the ring 43, which is attached to the shackle 40.
- the double tackle block 42 is shackled 44 to the lower end of the forestay 10.
- the lower winch drum 31 of the winch 29 drives a rope 45, 46.
- One part of this rope 45 passes through a block 47 attached to the port shroud anchorage point 48 by a shackle 49.
- This part of the rope 45 then passes through the port lower shroud tackle block 28 and is tied off to a ring 50 attached to the shackle 49 .
- both shrouds are lengthened while the forestay is simultaneously shortened, which tilts the mast 1 forwards .
- the winch drums 30, 31 are turned counterclockwise the mast 1 is ti lted backwards .
- There is a certain geometry of the rigging points 34 , 48, 41 and the mast step positions not stated here, whereby the shrouds and forestay do not become s lack or overtightened when the winch 29 is operated .
- FIG. 2 Apparatus for Side to Si de Movement of Mast and Sail (s ) (Fig . 2)
- Figure 2 depi cts a limited version of the invention shown in Figure 1 , in that a single winch drum controls the shrouds , so that the mast can be tilted side to side but not backwards and forwards .
- side to side movement of the mast and sail (s ) is more important for boat speed than fore and aft movement, at least at lower boat speeds .
- this arrangement is s impler, more economical , and lighter than that shown in figure 1, it has certain advantages . A more detailed description follows .
- the mast 1 is stepped on a central strong point 2 vi a a linked swivel 3, bolted 4 inside the lower mast extension 5 .
- This mast extension 5 is fitted with s Ambly shaped packing 6 and through bolted 7 inside the lower end of the mast 1.
- the linkage permits the mast to tilt backwards and forwards, as well as side to side, and the swivel permits the mast to rotate about its long axis.
- the top part cf the mast 1 is fitted with a mast tang 8, which has an eye projecting from the leading edge of the mast, and this eye is loosely fitted with a shackle 9.
- This shackle 9 passes through the top eye of the forestay 10 and the top eyes of the starboard shroud 11 and the port shroud 12.
- the winch drum of the winch 13 drives a rope 14, 15.
- the starboard part of this rope 14 passes through a block 16 attached to the starboard shroud anchorage point 17 by a shackle 18.
- This part of the rope 14 then passes through the starboard lower shroud tackle block 19 and is tied off to a ring 20 attached to the shackle 18.
- the starboard lower shroud tackle block 19 is attached by a tensioning tackle 21 to the eye 22 at the lower end of the starboard shroud 11.
- the other part of the rope driven by the winch 13 passes through a block 23 attached to the port shroud anchorage point 24 by a shackle 25.
- This part of the rope 15 then passes through the port lower shroud tackle block 26 and is tied off to a ring 27 attached to the shackle 25.
- the port lower shroud tackle block 26 is attached by a tensioning tackle 28 to the eye 29 at the lower end of the port shroud 12.
- the lower end of the forestay 10 is shackled 30 to the forestay anchorage point 31. Rake of the mast can be adjusted by altering the length of the forestay 10 and adjusting the tensioning tackles 21, 28.
- the invention is aimed at improving the boat speed of sailing craft and in general the technique is similar to that used by sailboarders.
- a) Lateral tilt of mast The central idea in this case is to offset the tendency for the sailing craft to heel away from the wind by tilting the mast and sail(s) towards the wind.
- b) Fore and aft tilt of mast The central idea in this case is to keep the boat balanced in the fore and aft plane so that the boat is not slowed down by excessive helm.
- planing hulls in particular, the CLR moves towards the stern as the boat lifts onto the plane, and excessive lee helm, for example, can be offset by tilting mast and sail(s) aft.
