Definitions
- Paper Splicers This invention relates to paper splicers for use in joining two lengths of continuous paper having registration holes spaced parallel to their longitudinal edges.
- Continuous paper is extensively used in the computing industry for feeding to computer printers.
- Each length of continuous paper comprises a large number of, for example a thousand, sheets connected together along perforations and having registration holes parallel to their longitudinal edges for engagement with the tractor feed system of the printer.
- a paper splicer for use in the joining of two lengths of continuous paper having registration holes spaced parallel to their longitudinal edges, the splicer comprising a support bearing two sets of registration pins for engagement with registration holes in respective ones of the two lengths of paper so as to align the end edges of the lengths of paper to be joined, and a clamp member for holding the two lengths of paper on the support with the end edges so aligned to enable the end edges to be joined by joining means.
- the two lengths of paper can be held with their end edges accurately aligned, and joining means, such as an adhesive tape, can then be applied so as to join the two lengths of paper together.
- joining means such as an adhesive tape
- the adhesive tape preferably extends across the full width of the paper and is supplied with perforations extending therealong so that the lengths of paper can be separated by tearing along the perforations after printing.
- the registration pins are preferably positioned so as to ensure that the spacing pitch of the registration holes is maintained across the join between the two lengths of paper, so that the tractor feed of the printer does not encounter any discontinuity in the spacing pitch across the join.
- the clamp member is elongate and has a slot extending therethrough parallel to the length of the member, the clamp member being adapted to overlie the two lengths of paper in its holding position such that the two end edges are visible along their complete widths through the slot.
- clamp member is preferably pivotally connected at one end to the support so as to be pivotable between an open position and a holding position.
- retaining means may be provided at the other end of the clamp member for holding the clamp member in its holding position.
- the retaining means may comprise a hook element and a loop element engageable with the hook element, each of the two elements being attached to a respective one of the clamp member and the support.
- Each set of registration pins for engagement with registration holes in a respective one of the lengths of paper conveniently comprises a series of registration pins for engaging registration holes adjacent one longitudinal edge of the paper and a series of registration pins for engaging registration holes adjacent the other longitudinal edge of the paper.
- At least one series of registration pins of the two sets is mounted on an adjustable member forming part of the support, the adjustable member being movable to vary the distance apart of the two series of registration pins for use with lengths of paper of different widths.
- the splicer further comprises an adhesive tape dispenser mounted so as to be movable parallel to the aligned end edges of the two lengths of papers and adapted to dispense therefrom during such movement a length of adhesive tape for joining the end edges together.
- the adhesive tape dispenser is mounted on the clamp member and is slidable therealong to apply adhesive tape to the end edges through the slot.
- the adhesive tape dispenser includes a cutter for cutting the adhesive tape.
- the invention also provides an adhesive tape having a line of perforations extending therealong.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a non- adjustable splicer
- Figure 1A is a diagrammatic section through part of the splicer of Figure 1
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of an adjustable splicer.
- the splicer illustrated therein comprises a support 1 bearing two sets of registration pins 2 and 3 for engagement with registration holes in respective ones of two lengths of paper to be joined.
- Each set 2, 3 of registrations pins comprises a series 4, 5 of five registration pins for engaging registration holes adjacent one longitudinal edge of the paper and a series 6, 7 of registration pins for engaging registration holes adjacent the other longitudinal edge of the paper.
- An elongate clamp member 8 is pivotally connected at one end to the support 1 by a hinge 9 and comprises two rails 10 and 11 defining therebetween a slot 12 extending therethrough parallel to the length of the clamp member 8.
- An adhesive tape dispenser 13 is slidable along the rails 10 and 11 and is engaged with the rails 10 and 11 by means of projections which extend outwardly from the dispenser 13 and engage within inwardly facing grooves in the rails 10 and 11.
- the adhesive tape dispenser 13 comprises a roll 16 of adhesive tape rotatably mounted within a casing 17 and spring biased in a counterclockwise direction so as to maintain adhesive tape fed out from the roll in tension.
- a resiliently biased roller 18 is also provided within the casing to apply downward pressure to press the adhesive tape fed out from the roll 16 on to the paper.
- a cutter blade 19 within the casing 17 is capable of being actuated by a button (not shown) in order to cut the tape when a suitable length of tape has been fed out from the casing 17.
- the adjustable splicer illustrated in Figure 2 is of similar construction to the non-adjustable splicer of Figure 1 except with respect to those features of difference shown in the drawings and described below.
- the same numerals are used in Figures 1 and 2 to indicate functionally similar parts.
- the support 1 shown in Figure 2 includes an adjustable member 20 carrying one series 6, 7 of registration pins of the two sets so that the distance apart of the two series of registration pins can be varied for use with lengths of paper of different widths.
- Each end of the adjustable member 20 is slidable within a respective slot in a slotted edge member 21, 22 of the support 1.
- the support 1 includes a fixed support member 23 for supporting the join between the two lengths of paper.
- the tape to be used for joining the lengths of paper will typically be 5 mm in width and will be supplied on rolls or in strips of varying lengths.
- One side of the tape is adhesive, whereas the other side of the tape can be printed on.
- the tape is perforated down its centre throughout its length to enable adjacent sheets of paper joined by the tape to be separated after printing.
