Description

CIRCULAR HEADING MACHINE .
This invention relates to boom-type circular heading machines for excavating tunnels.
It is well known to excavate tunnels by advancing boom-type heading machines within shields in stepwise fashion. However, the initial length required to house such equipment within a tunnel precludes their use both from the practical and economic viewpoints where the tunnel to be driven is relatively short. It is an object of this invention to provide a circular heading machine which will permit the erection of permanent supports in advance of the machine and its operators so that they are continuously protected and so that the work can proceed in a regular cyclic manner. Automatically, since the profile being cut by a boom- type heading machine can easily be changed, such a machine will also be capable of driving long roadways and excavating junctions in conventional fashion utilizing arched or square roadway supports and reverting to circular work whenever unstable ground is encountered.
According to the present invention there is provided a circular heading machine comprising an elongate machine body having at its forward end a forwardly directed cutter boom mounted thereon, means to advance the machine body, a gathering apron at the forward end of the machine body and at least one adaptable lifting means mounted on the machine body, extendable between the rear of the machine body and beyond the front of the machine body and adaptable to transport tunnel support segments at the rear of the machine to a location in advance of the machine for the erection of tunnel support rings, or to dispose of spoil from in front of the machine on to the gathering apron.
Preferably, said at least one adaptable lifting means comprises a crane mounted on one side of the machine body. Preferably also, the or each crane is slidably mounted on a track frame of the machine and rotatable about a vertical axis.
Preferably also, the or each crane is moved along the track frame by hydraulically actuated rack and pinion means.
Preferably also, the or each crane has a base a nd compact folding arm means and is rotated about the vertical axis of the base to hydraulic rotary actuator means. Preferably also, the or each crane is adaptable to carry a clam shell bucket or a detachable lifting bracket for connection to a ball-end adaptor attachable to a tunnel support segment.
Preferably also, a crane is mounted on each s i d e o f t h e m a c h i n e b ody .
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a circular heading machine according to the present invention, shown during a tunnel boring operation with the adaptable lift means inactive;
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine showing the adaptable lift means in use with a clam shell bucket;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the machine showing the adaptable lift means in use lifting segments of a tunnel support ring;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the machine of Fig. 4 ; Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of the lift means;
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the forward end of the machine showing a drilling machine;
Fig. 8 is a detail in side elevation showing the means for moving the lift means along the machine body; and Fig. 9 is a sectional end elevation on the line I X - I X o f F i g . 8 .
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 and 2, a track mounted self-propelled circular heading machine has an elongate body 11 which carries a cutting boom 12 at its forward end. A retractable platform 13 is mounted on top of the boom 12 and a roof bolting drilling machine 13' and guard rails 13' ' (Fig. 7) can be mounted on the platform 13 for use when the platform is extended as shown in Fig. 7.
Two adaptable lift means, in the form of compact folding cranes 14 are slidably mounted on the sides of the machine body as hereinafter described. Each crane 14 is mounted en a longitudinal track frame shown generally at 15A, 15B which is slidably mounted on a bracket 16A, 16B secured to L.H. and R.H. track frames 17A, 17B at each side of the machine body as best shown in Figs. 8 and 9. Each crane 14 has a pedestal base 18 on which a first arm 19 is rotatably carried, and from said arm 19 two other arms 20, 21 extend, each being pivotal so that the arms 20, 21 can extend in line with the arm 19 or fold over to a compact machine position, (see Fig. 3). The extremity of each arm is adaptable to carry a clam shell bucket 25 as illustrated in Fig. 3 or a quickdetach mechanism 26 (Figs. 4 and 6) for use in lifting and positioning segments 27 of a tunnel support ring 28. As best shown in Fig. 2, five segments 27 are provided per ring, four at 80º lap and one at 40º lap, the latter being positioned off centre of the vertical axis. The mechanism 26 also lifts and positions a preformed infill segment 29 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 ) to form a flat floor. This segment 29 is laid one half step in arrears of the newly formed ring as illustrated in Fig. 1.
As best i llustrated in Fig. 6 the quick-detach mechanism 26 comprises a bracket 30 detachably mounted on the end of the outer limb 21 of the crane 14 and a ball end adaptor 31 detachably connected to the segment 27/29 to be lifted.
The bracket 30 carries an axially rotatable socket head 32 into which the ball 33 of the ball end adaptor can locate when a latch 34 is released to permit entry of the ball. The adaptor has a threaded shank 35 extending from the ball end and this shank locates in a threaded hole 36 in the segment 27/29. The adaptor 31 is located in the appropriate segment prior to lifting and positioning with the ball projecting therefrom; the ball is engaged by the bracket 30, the segment is lifted and positioned with manual assistance in maneouvering the segment via the universal socket joint and after installation of the segment, the socket head is released from the ball and the ball end adaptor is removed from the segment.
The machine includes a means to limit the peripheral movement of the cutter boom to form an arcuate profile, said means may be a profile ring (not shown) to mechanically control movement of the boom, or an electronic program which controls the movement of the cutter boom electrically.
A gathering apron 40 is provided at the front end of the machine body and has a profiled nose piece 41 to suit the shape of the tunnel floor, i.e. a flat or arcuate floor. The circular heading machine as hereinbefore described has the following sequence of operations:- 1. Fit infill segment 29 over last assembled ring but only over the rear half thereof.
2. Advance the machine and cut the tunnel using the boom cutter and known profile limiting means and load out spoil simultaneously via gathering apron (Fig. 1)
3. Draw back the machine. 4. Where conditions dictate, fit drilling machine 13' and guard rails 13'' to cutter boom platform 13, drill roof and/or face and fit roof bolts and/or wood dowels to face. 5. Remove drilling machine, fit clam shell bucket 25 to crane arm 21 and deposit spoil from the invert on to gathering head for removal (Fig. 3) . 6. Remove clam shell bucket 25, fit quick detach bucket 30 to crane arm and ball-end adaptor 31 to a tunnel support segment.
7. Connect ball end adaptor 31 to bracket 30 and manoeuver the segment into position from rear of machine to front point of assembly along with joint plates and wood packers (not shown), (Fig. 4).
8. Disconnect ball end adaptor 31 from bracket 30 and remove it from installed segment.
9. Connect ball end adaptor 31 to the remaining four segments in turn, until all five segments have been installed as a complete tunnel support ring.
10. Advance machine to tunnel face and repeat sequence 1 to 9 .
Where the roadway to be driven becomes non-circular, i .e. a flat floor as in arched or squared roadways the cutting profile or program and the gathering apron nose piece are changed to suit.
Referring now to Figs. 8 and 9, which show a portion of the R.H. side of the machine, bracket 16B is bolted to the R.H. track frame 17B of the machine and has a pair of vertically spaced horizontal rails 49, 50. These are engaged by the base frame 15B . which carries the pedestal 18 of the crane and is slidable along the rails. The base frame 15 B includes a horizontal base plate 42 which engages the upper rail 49 and a depending skirt 43 which engages the lower rail 50. The skirt encloses the means for moving the base frame along the machine 'body. Said means comprises four sprocket wheels 44 which depend from the base plate 42 and are rotatably driven in one or other direction by hydraulic motors 45, 45' and 46, 46' in parallel. The sprocket wheels 44 engage an upstanding pin rack 47 mounted on bracket 16A. The motors 45, 45', 46, 46' are carried in the base plate 42 two on either side of the pedestal 18 and are co-axial with the respective sprocket wheel 44.
The crane 14 is rotated about its base frame 42 by hydraulic rotary actuators 48 which are most clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 to 4.
A similar arrangement is provided on the L.H. side of the machine.
