Abstract

A boat hull which converts (by means of hand-operated screws to attach or detach component parts) between a power boat mode, a sailing boat mode, and a rowing boat mode. Contouring of a boat's underhull with ridges (fledges and straking and channelling) being efficient for operation of the boat whether under motor power, sail, or oars and providing ''surface effect'' lift of the hull when at speed.

Description

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED MULTI-CONVERTIBLE SMALL BOAT HULL
The invention is described in the following statement The invention is of an easi ly convertible boat hull and its sets of conversion fittings , and novelty is claimed both as to boat and fitting features and to method of boat manu facture insofar as the adaptation of one bo a t from anothe r involves manufacture'. The kinds of small boats to which the single hull converts are: a rowing boat; a sail boat; and a motor boat. Conversion is by adding or subtracting the fittings (as shown in the plans) using the depicted identical hand screws preferably of plastic-type material, let into strategically placed threaded sockets in the hull. Unlike the conventional fitting-out of boat hulls ready for use, no tools are required and the operation is exceptionally fast and straightforward. Positional modifications for any of the fittings (seats, cuddy, console etc.) can be achieved simply by redrilling, and relocating the screw sockets within the hull. Each hull is manufactured conventionally, for example of hollow-walled fibreglass partially filled with flotation 'foam'. The plans show hulls of two sizes, one suitable for a mainsail only in the sailing mode
(say 10m2) and a relatively small, engine in the powered mode, say 20 h.p. (plan 1); the other larger size is appropriate for mainsail-and-jib (say 13m2 total) and an engine of say 40 h.p. (plan2). Uniqueness also resides in the dual-function of the under-hull contouring including the ridges or 'fledges' shown in the diagram which, according to the mode in use, provide a channel or'tunnel-effect' (augmenting lift from the water); an aquaplane effect; a stabilising effect; and an effect of countering lateral drift. The contours compatibly augment (in the sailboat mode) the daggerboards or releasable fins which are placed at the sides of the hull, amidships. The vertical slots which receive them are covered (when in the non-sail modes) by plates (of plastic or other material) affixed by the universal hand screw.
The cuddy shown in the plans is especially appropriate for the power mode.
Two screws only, one at each end, are required to instal the seats. Two screws are desirable.also for the steering console for the power mode, as the drawings show. The mounting and affixation of parts of the boats is, other than as shown, conventional; e.g. rowlocks, and outboard motors.
The drawing numbered F4shows how the screw sockets are held in the deck by shhoulders'. Rotation moulding in polyethylene is the best known hull construction.
