Abstract

1,144,253. Hydroplanes; steering. W. D. WILSON. 2 Aug., 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 35174/66. Headings B7A and B7V. A hydroplane watercraft comprises a buoyant hull 1 of lenticular shape, a hydroplane panel 4 attached to the bottom of the hull tangentially thereto abaft a cockpit 7, and a rectangular well 11 extending through the hull and the panel aforesaid, in which well a conventional outboard propulsion or power unit (13), Fig. 6 (not shown), can be lodged so that a screw propeller thereon lies below the panel, steering being effected by causing the craft to heel towards the direction to be taken so that the most deeply immersad portion of the hull is then situated to one side of the fore-and-aft axis and the craft is rotated about said portion by the propeller. Foot-damps (10), Fig. 5 (not shown), may be mounted on the deck or floor of the cockpit to permit the user of the craft to stand in the attitude of a skier and steer the craft by changing his stance. A gunwale 8 and a handrail 9 are provided adjacent the forward end of the cockpit. The hull includes two hollow spheroidal segments 2, 3 with a resilient sealing strip 16 therebetween that also serves as a fender, the segments being made of e.g. sheet metal, preformed laminated wood, or reinforced synthetic-resin material such as fibreglass. Means for supporting the power unit on a bulkhead 12 in the well 11 may be such that said unit can be raised rapidly when the craft is beached.
