Self Anchoring Retaining Wall for Granular Materials
Technical field
The invention concerns a self anchoring retaining wall for storing granular materials. It can be used as the walls of a bunker - also called a horizontal silo - and as partition. In addition to the wall sheet itself the self anchoring retaining wall consists of anchor and anchor bars.
Technical background Granular materials stored on floor in barns and other build¬ ings are often confined by walls in order to obtain a suit¬ able hight of storage and with it a limited use of ground area. The walls are also used to keep different kinds of granular materials apart. Walls which are not outer walls in the storage buildings are usually fixed to foundations or other building parts in order to ensure the stability of the walls. However, retaining walls which can be attached to and dismantled from fixed mountings are used.
But with these types of retaining walls and partitions it may be very difficult to use the storage facilities effi¬ ciently when the need for storage changes because of changes in assortment of materials or amounts to be stored. You may then either accept the difficulties or carry out the neces¬ sary rebuildings and accept the following expenses.
Many elder buildings which have been used for other purposes are changed to granular material stores. Here it must be ensured that the outer walls and other retaining walls have the necessary strength to withstand the loads exerted by the stored materials in order to achieve a rational exploitation of the buildings.
By storing in heaps on ground the granular materials occupie relatively big areas and have the tendency of further spreading. Such a way of storage may be difficult to manage and the re-collection may be laborious.
Disclosure of the invention
The self anchoring retaining wall for storing granular materials according to the invention is peculiar thereby that the retaining capability is attained by connecting the wall to a to the wall belonging anchor which is fixed by the stored material. The self anchoring implies that neither the wall nor the anchor need to be fastened to the floor or ground.
The retaining wall is loaded by the stored granular materi- als. There will be pressure and friction forces on the wall. As a result of
- the internal friction of the granular material
- the cohesion of the granular material
- the friction between the granular material and the ground
- the adhesion between the granular material and the ground
- the weight of the granular material
the anchor by means of the anchor bars prevents the wall from overturning and sliding. The ground must be able to prevent sinking of the wall which normally do not require any separate arrangements.
So, the wall is connected to an anchor to the side from which it is going to be loaded. If the wall is to be used as a partition or if it may be loaded from any side, it shall be connected to anchors at both sides.
Short discription of the drawing
The drawing shows a self anchoring retaining wall for granu¬ lar materials according to the invention. Figure 1 shows the back view and the side view of the wall, and figure 2 shows a perspective view of the wall.
The self anchoring retaining wall consists of the wall sheet (1) which by means of the anchor bars (3) is fixed to the anchor (2) .
The drawing shows a self anchoring retaining wall composed of modules.
Modes of carrying out the invention
The anchor may be constructed so that it is continuing unabruptly along the wall. But when the wall is composed of modules it can also be constructed in the way that the breadth of a module of an anchor is less than the breadth of a module of the wall. The height of the anchor then have to be changed accordingly.
Industrial exploitation
Buildings with reasonably levelled floors can quickly, easily, and cheaply and without foregoing rebuilding be arranged with self anchoring retaining walls and partitions for storage of granular materials. By placing the retaining wall along walls with insufficient strength to withstand the pressure excerted by stored granular materials a suitable hight of storage can be accomplished here, too, and thereby a better exploitation of the storage facilities. Likewise, confined storage places can be arranged on out-door grounds when the walls are ensured against sinking. Building up the retaining wall by modules makes it easy to rebuild and
expand the wall according to changes in needs, and it can easily be dismantled if e.g. the floor in a storage building is intended to be used for other purposes.
