Abstract

A floating breeding apparatus for fish or the like and including at least one net bag (11) suspended from pontoons or the like, the open end (12) of which net bag is attached to a ring shaped support (13) surrounding the net bag opening. The purpose is to achieve a floating breeding apparatus which can easily be subdivided into smaller breeding volumes allowing separation of such a reduced breeding volume from the surrounding water. These tasks have been solved therein that the bottom (16) of the net bag (11) is liftable toward the opening of the bag and affixable in its raised position, thus forming at least one space (18) limited by the side material or materials (14, 25) of the bag, and having a reduced volume compared to the original volume of the bag.

Description

A floating breeding device for fish or the like
The present invention concerns a floating breeding apparatus for fish or the like consisting of at least one net bag suspended from pontoons or the like, the open end of which net bag is attached to at least one ring shaped support enclosing the opening of the net bag.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Breeding of fish on an industrial scale in large net bags is not quite problem free, even if the breeding takes place in the open sea. Thus it happens that the fish become sick and must be treated in different ways, for example by medication. In closed breeding pools this is not a problem, but in open net bags, where the water flows in and out, medication is impossible. Up to now, in such cases one has been forced to mov e the fish to closed containers where the treatment can take place, but when it comes to breeding in volumes of 10.000 m and more and when the breeding capacity is 50-100 tons per production cycle such actions require an enormous amount of work and in practice are almost impossible to carry out.
Another problem is the large volume of the net bag when the young fxsh are bred. It would be desirable for the net bag to be relatively shallow in the beginning of the breeding cycle, but still allow free swimming over large distances. Further, it would be desirable that the size of the net mesh be smaller in the beginning of the breeding period, which would also prevent undesired fish from forcing their way into the bag.
Because the breeding period is usually several years an accumulation of organisms can build up on the net bag s o that the flow of water is retarded, while the weight of the net increases and its flexibility decreases.
THE PURPOSE AND MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE INVENTION The purpose of the present invention is to provide a floating breeding apparatus, which can be subdivided in a simple way into smaller, relatively shallow breeding volumes, with the possibility of shutting off such a reduced breeding volume from the surrounding water so that it is essentially water tight. Another purpose of the invention is to be able to change or extend part of or all of the side material of the net bag without requiring that the fish be moved to another container or bag, while retaining the required flexibility for making such reduced breeding volumes. These tasks have been solved in that the bottom of the net bag is raisable up to its opening and affixable in its raised position while forming with one or more sides of the net bag at least one limited volume, smaller in comparison with the original volume of the net bag.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will be described below with reference to the attached drawings which show some exemplifications.
Fig 1 shows a breeding apparatus according to the invention from above.
Fig 2 is a section along line II - II in fig 1.
Fig 1 shows a part of the side material of the breeding apparatus in a larger scale and in perspective.
Fig 4 shows a section along line IV-IV in fig 2.
Fig 5 shows a section of a modified exemplification of the side material of the breeding apparatus analogous to the section shown if fig 4.
Fig 6 shows a modified exemplification of the breeding apparatus in a side view. DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS
The breeding apparatus according to the invention consists of a net bag 11, the upper opening 12 of which is attached to a ring shaped support 13, which can also be the pontoons of the breeding apparatus. The net bag consists of side material 14, which can be divided into sectors 14a, 14b, 14c etc, connected to each other by flexible or bendable connectors 15 and a bottom 16. At the junction between sides 14 of the net bag and its bottom 16, a preferably ring shaped body 17 is attached, which in the exemplification shown can act as the sinker of the net bag. The body 17 is appropriately placed concentric with the support 13 and has a smaller diameter and/or circumference than the support, so that the body can be lifted up toward and to a level with the support 13, as is shown in fig 2 by a dot-dashed line, and in which position the side material 14 of the net bag forms a limited volume 18 with significantly reduced size compared with the original size of the net bag. The ring shaped. body 17 can advantageously consist of a tube with variable displacement, where the free inner volume of the tube can be filled with water when it is to be used as a sinker, or alternatively emptied and filled with air when the bottom 16 of the net bag is to be lifted towards the pontoon holder 13. Blowing the tanks of the sinker 17 is appropriately done with a compressor mounted on a service boat.
In cases where there is a construction which narrows upward near the upper side of the pontoon opposite the net bag, raising and lowering the ring shaped body 17 can be accomplished by a winch on the said construction.
The connectors 15 between the side material sectors 14 are made of flexible or bendable profiled bars 20 and 21, for example made of a rubber material, and have longitudinal tracks 22 in the form of open grooves, in which slides 23 of appropriate form are inserted, for instance fasterners attached to the edges of the side material 14. The connectors 15 are appropriately made with double pairs of tracks 22 and 24 so arranged that an outer side material sector 25 can be placed parallel to and outside the sector shaped side material 14, which outer sector shaped side 25 is equipped with slides in the same way as the sides 14, which slides 26 can be inserted into the open grooves of the tracks 24. The material in the outer side sectors 25 can vary according to the purpose of the outer sides. If the inner side material is to be changed because of an accumulation of sea growth or because of damage of some sort, a similar net sector can be placed in the outer tracks 24, and then the inner side sectors can be taken away for cleaning, repair or the like. If the fish in the breeding net bag become sick or are to be treated as a preventative measure an outer side sector 25 can be applied in the form of a tarpaulin or the like, so that an essentially water tight outer side is obtained. By lifting the ring shaped body 17 toward the water surface the above mentioned limited volumes T8 are formed. whereby the outer side material 14 or the outer side material 14 and 25 resp. form both the sides and the bottom of thf volume.
If it is feared that fish or animals of prey, for example seals, can penetrate to the inner part of the net bag by biting the outer side material, it is possible to arrange as an outer side a stronger protective net, which can withstand such attacks. It is even possible to apply a fine mesh net in the beginning of the breeding period and later exchange it for a net with larger mesh when the fish have grown somewhat.
In water with strong currents and especially in water where such currents change often, it can be appropriate to make the connectors 15 so that they can act as strain dampers, as is shown in fig 5, and which are also made of a rubber material which can withstand strong pulling forces. It is even possible to make the connectors of a stiff material, for example aluminium, in a number of sections connected to each other by wires pressed to each section, for example, so that the connectors 15 as well as the outer side material sectors 14 and 25 can bend as required when the ring shaped body 17 is lifted toward the water surface.
Of course it is possible to use more than one ring shaped body 17, for example two of them, at some distance from each other, as is shown in figure 6. One of the ring shaped bodies 17a is placed at the bottom of the net bag as in the previously described exemplification, while the other ring shaped body 17b is arranged for example at half the height of the side. In that case the lowermost body 17a is so much smaller than the intermediate member 17b, as corresponds to the width of the volume 18b which is formed when both bodies 17a and 17b are raised toward the surface of the water.
The invention is not limited to the exemplifications that have been shown and described, but a number of variations are possible within the scope of the claims.
