Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an arrangement for fixing an impulse wheel to a rotatable machine element journalled relative to a fixed machine element.
  • impulse wheels together with suitable sensor means to indicate rotary movement of a journalled machine element.
  • anti-block braking systems to individually sense the speed of the vehicle wheels.
  • problems arise, however, when including such impulse wheels in the vehicle, especially in the front wheels, since it is difficult to make room for these impulse wheels without increasing the wheel width.
  • the fixing of the impulse wheel to the wheel also requires that the wheel be machined and adapted to a lesser or greater extent, which thereby increases costs.
  • the present invention intends to eliminate these disadvantages of known designs and provides a simple and inexpensive arrangement for fixing the impulse wheel to the vehicle wheel, which does not require any increase in the vehicle wheel width.
  • the invention can also be used in other fields in addition to the automo ⁇ tive industry to solve similar problems. According to the invention this is achieved by the impulse wheel being non-rotatably fixed to a ring which is firmly fixed to the rotatable machine element and is included in an axle seal between the machine elements, the impulse wheel and the axle seal forming a unit for assembly.
  • Fig 1 shows a cross section of a vehicle wheel mounting
  • Fig 2 shows on a larger scale a cross section of an impulse wheel and a sealing ring in a vehicle wheel mounting.
  • Fig 1 shows a vehicle front wheel mounting. It comprises a partially shown spindle 1 with a journal 2 on which a wheel hub 3 is mounted via two conical roller bearings 4. One of the vehicle wheels (not shown) is fixed to the wheel hub 3 in a conventional manner. Between the wheel hub 3 and the spindle 1 there is disposed an axle seal 5, which has a metallic outer ring 6 and is forced into an annular cavity 7 in one side surface of the wheel hub 3.
  • the outer ring 6 comprises two metal rings 6 which are stamped together to provide a U-shaped cross section.
  • the axle seal 5 also comprises an inner ring 8 which is forced on to a wear ring 9 forced onto the journal 2.
  • the inner ring 8 is made of elastic material and is radially reinforced by a metal reinforcing ring 10. An internal lip 11 of the inner ring 8 is pressed by an annular spring 12 radially outwards to sealing contact with the outer ring 6 at the same time as the outer ring 6 is allowed to slip relative to the lip 11.
  • an impulse wheel 13 is fixed to the side surface of the outer ring 6, for example by means of a number of spot welds.
  • the impulse wheel 13 is in the form of an annular metal disc with a plurality of axial teeth 15 on the side facing the spindle 1.
  • the axle seal 5 is forced into the cavity 7 in the wheel hub 3, so that an edge of the impuls wheel 13 extending radially outside the outer ring 6 abuts an axial side surface of the wheel hub 3.
  • the axial thickness of the impulse wheel 13 is at least twice that of the sheet metal material which the outer ring 6 is made of.
  • the impulse wheel 13 cooperates with a magnetic sensor 16 fixed in a cavity in the spindle 1 and included in an arrangement for sensing the rotational speed of each wheel hub 3 and thus each vehicle wheel.
  • the sensor 16 can sense the speed at which the teeth of the impulse wheel 13 pass and can send an output signal proportional to the rotational speed.
  • the impulse wheel 13 is made as a disc, it can be made sufficiently thick and rigid that axial throw of the impulse wheel can be kept to a minimum. In order to enable the sensor 16 to sense the teeth 15 with sufficient accuracy, it is quite important that the sensor 16 be mounted sufficiently close to the impulse wheel 13.
  • the arrangement according to the invention also makes it possible to mount the impulse wheel 13 without it taking up any extra space in the axial direction. By fixing the impulse wheel 13 to the seal 5 by pre-assembly, it is assured that the impulse wheel 13 will be correctly located, in addition to simplifying mounting.
  • the seal 5 is a standard component which can be manufactured in long series at relatively low cost.
  • the manufacture of the impulse wheel 13 is also simple and inexpensive.
  • a very simple and inexpensive design is provided which still meets high requirements of functional reliability.
  • the arrangement does not require any special machining of the wheel hub 3. If the vehicle is not to be equipped with a rotational speed sensor, a conventional seal without impulse wheel can still be put in place.
  • the invention can also be used with advantage in ways other than those described in the above example.
  • the invention can be used in any machine element rotatably journalled on a fixed machine element.
  • the impulse wheel can have a plurality of magnets for example.
