Abstract

The frame (2-5) of a door (1) is larger than the wall opening (14) in association with which the door is to be mounted. Consequently, the frame cannot be mounted within the wall opening. Instead it is mounted at one side of the wall (11).

Description

i
Doo With frame
The present invention relates to a door with frame.
The usual manner of mounting doors in wall openings is to position the frame in a slightly larger wall opening in which it is secured by wedges, nails and/or screws whereupon there is mounted a lining covering the joint between the frame and the door opening on both sides, possibly after adding ledges to increase the thickness of the frame to the same thickness as the wall. Such a mounting requires many parts and operational steps. Above all it is cumbersome to adjust the door if the building settles, since the lining must then first be removed.
The object of the present invention is to provide a door which simplifies the mounting operation and provides a more effective construction of the building, while at the same time being easily adaptable to modern interiors.
The door according to the invention is character¬ ized in that the outer dimensions of the frame are larger than the wall opening in association with which the door is to be mounted, the door being adapted for moun¬ ting at one side of the wall instead of within the wall opening.
In order that the wall shall not take up too much space in the room after mounting, the frame should be relatively thin, preferably of approximately the same thickness as the door leaf. When a rabbet for the door leaf is required, it may be constituted by a flat strip mounted between the frame and the wall, so as not sub¬ stantially to increase the thickness of the frame.
Further features and advantages of the present invention will appear from the following specification, reference being had to the drawing which illustrates an embodiment of the door according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a wall with a door according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on a larger scale along the line II-II in Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections along the lines III-III and IV-IV respectively in Fig. 2.
The door illustrated in the drawing consists of a door leaf 1 and a frame which has about the same thickness as the door leaf 1. The frame is constituted by two vertical pilasterstrip-like, relatively wide lateral frame members or jambs 2 and 3, respectively, which at the top and the bottom are interconnected by a thin top frame member or lintel 4 and a thin sill bar 5, respectively, both being made of metal. The lintel 4 may preferably have an angular cross-section for greater stiffness, whereas the sill bar 5 may be covered by a low-profiled covering rib 6 of plastic material which may preferably have a curved upper face to facilitate passage of trolleys, wheeled chairs and the like through the door opening.
The door leaf 1 may in the usual manner be hinged to one of the jambs by means of hinges 7, and in order to provide a larger stability and rigidity the hinge flap 8 that is to be attached to the jamb 2 may take the form of an angular fitting having a leg 9 extending along the inner side of the jamb 2.
Rabbets for the door leaf 1 may be provided in the jambs 2 and 3, but may also as indicated in the drawing be provided by flat strips 10 mounted between the wall 11 and each of the jambs 2 and 3. A correspon¬ ding strip 10 * may be provided between the jamb and the wall at the outer edge of the jamb in order to provide a uniform spacing of the jamb from the wall 11.
The door according to the invention may be mounted on one side or the other of the wall 11, for instance
__ O PI __ by means of two bolts or screws 12 through each of the jambs 2 and 3. As indicated in the drawing the screws or bolts 12 may be secured in expanding plastic plugs 15. The drilled holes 15 and 17 in the wall 11 and the jamb 2, respectively, may have the same diameter and may be drilled in one operation, whereupon the plastic plug 15 may be inserted in the wall 11 through the hole 17 in the jamb 2. The screws or bolts 12 may also be covered by plugs 13 of the same material as in the jambs 2 or 3 or of. another material. As illustrated in Fig. 2, it is preferred to mount the door so that the lateral edges of the door leaf 1 extend in substantially the same planes as the lateral edges of the opening 14 in the wall 11.
