  • the openings 30 enable jets of compressed air from an air reservoir below the plate to be directed over the upper surface of the plate 20, the direction of each such jet being in plan view perpendicular to the leading edge 34 of the flap 32 over which the jet travels from the reservoir.
  • All the jets in any one of said zones are directed in the same direction, and in each zone this direction is indicated by an arrow.
  • the respective zones have their openings 30 arranged so that the jets in the respective zones are directed generally around a closed circulation path which. proceeds from a first zone 28 through the successive zones 22, 24 and 26.
  • the first zone 28 is aligned with the input and output conveyors 12 and 14 and has its respective ends adjoining the junction plates 16 and 18 respectively.
  • the jets thereof are directed towards the next downstream zone (i.e. 24, 26, 28 respectively) which lies immediately adjacent thereto and in which the jets are directed in a perpendicular direction thereto.
  • an air reservoir chamber 36 for receiving air under pressure from a source (not shown) is provided below the plate 20 and communicates with the jet openings 30.
  • a lateral guide 38 bounds the closed circulation path provided by the zones 22 to 28.
  • the guide 38 is smoothly curved at the corners of the zones 22, 24 and 26, and has a horizontally-extending opening 40 provided for reasons that will be described later.
  • a cover plate 42 is adjustably mounted above the circula tion table and guide 38 and contains vent holes 44. Operation of the described apparatus for combining input rows of cans into a single output file is as follows:-
  • the cover plate 42 is adjusted in height so that the distance between this and the plate 20 is marginally greater than the height of the cans to be received by the combiner from the input conveyor 12.
  • the speeds of the two conveyors 12, 14 are set so that the output conveyor 14 travels six times as fast as the input conveyor 12, and successive rows of cans, each containing six upright cans disposed basedownwards, are supplied to the conveyor 12. It should be noted that if instead the rows on the input conveyor 12 each contain 'n' cans, the output conveyor 14 would be arranged to travel at a speed which is 'n' times as fast as that of the input conveyor 12. As the rows of cans reach the combiner 10 they 'float' onto the bed of air provided by the jets issuing through the openings 30.
  • Some of the cans (i.e. those in the file of input cans that are aligned with the zone 28) pass directly onto the "straight- through" zone 28, the width of that zone corresponding approximately to the diameter of a can, and, propelled by the jets in that zone, this file of cans passes directly on to the output conveyor 14.
  • Other cans arriving in the other files on the input conveyor travel onto the zone 26 where they are urged across the mouth of the inlet passageway (constituted by the junction plate 16) towards the zone 28.
  • Those cans which cannot find a place in the zone 28 between cans already passing therealong are urged sideways in the zone 26 either by engagement with the cans in the zone 28, or by other cans arriving on the input conveyor 12, until they reach the zone 22.
  • the guide 38 acts to prevent the outermost cans from leaving the circulation table. Any cans which inadvertently arrive on their sides, instead of the closed ends, are ejected from the table through the opening 40, and hence cannot create a blockage within the combiner. Once in the combiner, the cans are prevented from falling over by the closely-adjoining cover plate 42.
  • the circulation table 20 is extended as shown in the Figure 4 to include as an integral part thereof a long outlet passageway 18 which is intended to deliver cans directly at an outlet position, without the use of a separate conveyor such as 14. That outlet passageway is provided with apertures similar to the table apertures 30 for enabling jets of air to issue from an air reservoir below and propel cans along that passageway directly to said outlet position.
  • the outlet passageway may be placed in any other convenient position around the table provided that it has a similar tangential relationship with the table and circulation path thereon, so that one file of cans may pass directly around a peripheral part of said circulation path to said outlet passageway.
  • the speeds of the air jets in the respective zones may be made constant, or otherwise variable to suit the rate at which cans are being delivered to the circulation table.
  • the air jet speeds should be such as to give a can circulation speed intermediate the respective speeds of the incoming and outgoing cans.
  • the speeds of the air jets may be made different in the respective zones of the table; for example the jet speeds may be arranged to progressively increase around the circulation table, giving the highest speed in the fourth (final) zone 26.
  • Other forms of combiner may have different forms of aperture 30 for producing the air jets; for example, where the circulation table comprises a plate 20 of substantial thickness, said apertures may be formed by drilling holes at appropriate inclinations therethrough.
  • propulsion of the cans through and around the circulation table is preferably achieved by means of said air jet propulsion means, other forms of propulsion means may be used; for example, by appropriately-mounted and driven rollers or belts.

Abstract

Un appareil de combinaison d'articles arrivant en rangees successives pour les faire sortir en une seule file de sortie, comprend une table de circulation horizontale (20) ayant une pluralite d'ajutages (30) ejectant de l'air provenant d'une chambre sous pression, les jets d'air etant inclines vers le haut sous un petit angle. Ces jets sont orientes en differentes directions dans differentes zones (22, 24, 26, 28) de la table (20), de telle sorte qu'un article (p.ex. une boite vide) est porte par les jets d'air dans les directions respectives indiquees par les fleches. Les articles amenes sur une transporteuse d'arrivee (12) sont recus de la table par une transporteuse de sortie (14) se deplacant a une vitesse plus grande. La zone (28) constitue une zone en ligne droite pour debiter une file d'articles d'entrees, directement vers la transporteuse de sortie. Les articles d'autres files d'arrivees se deplacent vers la zone (26) pour fusionner lorsque la possibilite se presente avec des articles s'eloignant, ecartes, sur la zone (28). Les articles qui ne peuvent fusionner dans la file de sortie sont pousses vers la zone (22) ou ils sont reachemines vers la zone (24) puis vers la zone (26), pour fusionner plus tard avec ladite file de sortie.
