Definitions
- a method for the preparation of a faced sponge rubber carpet underlayment comprising forming a foamable and curable rubber layer, heating the rubber, laying a bonded nonwoven sheet of synthetic organic fibers fiat atop the hot layer of rubber at a temperature in the range of about and C. but below that or equal to the temperature at which the fabric exhibits maximum shrinkage, and then heating the combination to a temperature in the range of about to C. to effect foaming and curing of the rubber as well as adhesion of the rubber to the fabric, the said fabric having a net irreversible thermal shrinkage in the lengthwise and Widthwise directions of between about 1.2 and 5% when heated to about 170 C. and subsequently cooled.

Abstract
A METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF A FACED SPONGE RUBBER CARPET UNDERLAYMENT COMPRISING FORMING A FOAMABLE AND CURABLE RUBBER LAYER, HEATING THE RUBBER, LAYING A BONDED NONWOVEN SHEET OF SYNTHETIC ORGANIC FIBERS FLAT ATOP THE HOT LAYER OF RUBBER AT A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 90 AND 150*C, BUT BELOW THAT OR EQUAL TO THE TEMPERATURE AT WHICH THE FABRIC EXHIBITS MAXIMUM SHRINKAGE, AND THEN HEATING THE COMBINATION TO A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 170 TO 190*C, TO EFFECT FOAMING AND CURING OF THE RUBBER AS WELL AS ADHESTION OF THE RUBBER TO THE FABRIC, THE SAID FABRIC HAVING A NET IRREVERSIBLE THERMAL SHRINKAGE IN THE LENGTHWISE AND WIDTHWISE DIRECTIONS OF BETWEEN ABOUT 1.2 AND 5% WHEN HEATED TO ABOUT 170*C, AND SUBSEQUENTLY COOLED.
