Description

JAMEs Aperto, or um PATENT OFFICE.
ZABETH, new JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRlNTiNG Oils-CLOTHS.
ipccflcatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,270, dal-lied June 7, 13539; Reissue No. 992, dated July 1 .To {al} whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMus Amino, of Eliza` beth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful 1inprovemeut in the Printing of Oil Cloths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a,v full, clear, and exact description of the saine,
rcference'hcing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurcs l and 2 are transverse sections of the blocks used to produce 'my improvement, taken, respectively, in the lines .r :l: tc tr', Figs.
3 and 4; Figs. 3 and 4,1acc views ofthe saine; l Fig. 5, a face view of a piece of oil-cloth print ed accordingto my invention; Fig. (i, an enlarged section of n block.
'Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu the several figures.
The object of this invention is to give tothe surface of oil-cloth a new and `ornzunental effeet resembling daiuask. To this end [form thc ground and iigurc ofthe oil-cloth by means of parallel ridges or raised lines, the ridges or lines of the gure being at right angles tol those of the ground, so that the desired eii'cct will be produced by the action of light.
In carrying out this invention it is not essential that different colors he employed*- that is to say, the ground and ligure may be printed with the saine color, as the effect is ob i tained by the different positions ot" theI lilies or ridges of the ground and ligures--still, different colors may be employed, and the same effect obtained, and in certain styles of figures a varictr of colors would lic preferable.
A, Figs. 1 and 3, represents a bloc-ir, constructed of the usual material, of any proper size, and having its face formed of a series of parallel ridges or raised surfaces, a, produced by cutting out spaces of suitable width hctwcen thcin. The ridges or raised vsurfaces extend the whole width ol the block, und may j cover its cutire-sinliicc if one color only is to he used in the process of priniinfr. This block.'
may be tcrrned the 4grouinl-`hlool;, as it. used to raise the ground tint into ridges, ns shown atb in Fig. 5, the ridges b correspoinling, of conrse,to thespaces between the rnisrd ridges or surfaces a. on the block A. The block A is pressed on the ground tint oreolor by. menus of the usuul press, und the ground color is placed on the canvas iu 'the usunl or in an)Y l s, Iseo.
proper way. lt will he 'seen that the block .s
tint is green or soft, in order that the necessary ridges l; may heiforuled. 'heu the ridges l are foi-ined. and while the ground color is still green or soft, thc block l, Figs. 2 and 4, is pressed on it. )his block li has the design or ornamental emitiguration (i on its face'slde i inrelicf. (Seelf'igfl.) ThedesiguCis formed by purullel ridges or ruised surfaces r, which run at right a-ngies with those, l, of the block A, und consequently the ligure C in Fig. 5 is produrcd by ridges or'rniscd surfaces d at rightangies to ii., Whcnthehlock `iispressed ou the green or soft tint previously ridged by the pressure of the block A, thc desired coniignrntion is produced with onecoloronly,he
the ridged or aised surfaces. ln ruses Where the figure is of a dili'eront color from the ground, ille block 1 has portions of its sur face cut out corresponding to the iig'ure, so that one color will not interfere with another, each block A l ridgug its peculiar color or ground tiui',\vhicli may he placed on the cloth in the usual way, euch block requiring a sepa rate ground or color.
It will readily be seen thai as theduinask effect is produced by the reflection of'light from the lined surfaces ofthe ground and iigurc ruiming in contrary or reversedireciions, that. color does not ctlect the result. A varietgY of colors, however, muy in certuin cases bc very desirable, for certain styles of figures may require them, but the suine daino.. c cf feet, when the ground und. ligure nre ridg'cd or lined 1n reverse ,lirections nill lie obtained. i l would rennirk that, although lilith blocks hure been described :as being formed of parellcl ridges, still one of rhein new have broken l ridges or dots, and a similar effect will be cbtained.
