' HENRY W. PUTNAM, on B NNmePron, VERMQNT, Ass ennn, BY Mnsnn ASSIGNMENTS,'OF JOEL B. MILLER, DECEASED.
TIMPROVEMENT m BOTTLE-ISTOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,302, dated October 27,1874 Reissue No. 9,002, dated December 23, 1879; application filed October 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that J oE'L B, 'MILLER, of Ron dout, 1n the county of Ulster and State ot'New York, did invent a new and useful Improve.
ment in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the followinp; is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of bottlestoppers which are located within the bottles, ugs,-or vials, to close the mouthof the-same from below; and it consists of a spring bail and handle permanently attached to the upper end of such internal stopper, by means of which bail and handle the cork orstopper is removed from and fastened in the throat of the bottle,
and properly held in place throughout.
Figure l is a side view of the improved stopper, showingit suspended intoan open bottle. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, showing it drawn up to close the bottle.
Arepresents the bottlefB, the stopper; G, the
spring attachment or bail. D is a wire or rod,
which is substantially attached in any manner tothe stopper, and whichforms a loop or eye, or a similar device, at its upper end, to which the spring attachment or ball 0 is fastened.
The said bail 0 may be of any suitable shape;
but an eye or handle, F, larger in diameter at its lower part than the throat of the bottle, is formed on or a cross'attached to its upper end, to prevent it from slipping into the bottle.
The body of th e bail is preferably staple-shaped,
being made of twolegs or branche's,aa, which bow outward so as to form springs, which bear against the sides of the throat .of the bottle.
To fill or empty the bottle the stopper is forced down and-suspended from the eye F, as shown in Fig. 1. For closing the bottle the stopper is drawn up, as in Fig. 2. The springs 'a. a, formed by making the hail of a bow shape,
or with two legs or branches, will, owing to their elasticity, spring against the throat of V the bottle, so as to render the casual displace ment of the stopper. impossible.-
The stopper is forced down and raised up for opening and closing the bottle with per feet ease, the peculiar form of bail and handle greatly facilitating the opening and, closing of I the bottle. I r
By hingin'g o1- jointing the bail to the stopp'er as shown, the same can be turned away from the mouth of the bottle, as indicated in to form springs a a above the stopper, sub- I st autially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of an internal bottle-' stopper with. a bail, O, forming the springs a, and theenlargeinent F: above said springs, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The internal bottle-stopper provided with a hinged or jointed bail, O, which is composed of two elastic legs -or branches, a, and of an eye or finger loop, substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY W- PUTN'AM.
