Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs OLIVER, or soUTn BEND; INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Spceitcation forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 144,785, dated November 1S, 1873; reissue No. 7,097, dated May .2, 19.76; application filed June 19, 187:3.
To all whom Iit may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES OLIVER, of South Bend, county ot' St. Joseph, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and l do hereby declare the followingto be such a i'nll, clear, and exact description thereoll as will enable others skilled in the art to which in v invention relates to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying,` drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to that class of plows which v have a coltcr above the plow-point; and consists in certain details ol' construction, as hereinafter specified and claimed.-
Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a plow embodying m3' invention. Fig..3 is a perspective View of a plow-standard.
A represents an ordinary plow-beam7 toV which the standard B is attached. U is the plow-point, D the coltcr, E the land-side7 and G the niold-board, of the plow. The moldboard thus extended by the addition of the" plow-pointv and colter is made with thexn to.
conform with the circle and furrow line or working surface ci' the colter-point, and leaves 0r forms an unbroken surface from the front edge of the colter to the heel of the moldboalrd, which in use will grind perfectly throughout. By this means the clogging and sticking ofthe earth behind the colter-point arc obviated, strength is added to the colter, and an easier and more natural turning mold!A board is formed. The curvature ot' the moldboard and coltcr is such that in grinding and polishingthe grindstone fits perfectl`- over all the surface. J represents a jointer attached to the plombeam A above the plow-point, which is so constructed as to conform with the saine curve as the inoldboard and colter, and on the same principle. The standard B is recessed npon one side for tho reception c the land-side, which land-side extends forward and lorlns a continuation ot' the front edge et" the standard. 0n the other side of the stand ard it is formed to eontnrm to the shape ot' the mold-board, which mold-hoard G extends forward even with the front edge of the standard, and forms. with the standard, a seat,
against which the rear edge of the upper'portion ot' the eol'ter is seated. The lower end ot the standard is enlarged and spread out beneath the plow-point O, forming a firm bear ing or seat for the said plowpoint, and to which it is directly attached. The forward edge of the standard, together with the forward edge of the mold-board and land-side, form a uniformly-curyed seat for the colter andk plow-point, the rear edges ol' which have a direct bearing against the entire forward edge oi the moldboard. X represents that Vportion of the standard which may be termed the shank7 that extends between the mold'- board and the plowlbeam. r
What I claimas new is- 1. The combination, with a mold-board, the upper edge of which is constructed to extend well forward the shank X'of the standard, of' a colter having the whole length ot' its rear edge seated directly aga-inst the i'ront edge of the mold-board, and extending to the top and in line' with the upper edge ol' the lnoidboard, substantialliv as andior the purpose described.
2. The standard B, extended. ibrwaid, as shown at a, the mold-board and` land side ex tcndedrforward even with the standard, together forming a unil'oriuly-curved seat for the col-ter and plowpoint, substantiallyv as described.
3. The standard B, extended forward, as at a, provided with bearings t'or and conforming to the shape ofthe inoidboard and land-side, and with an enlarged foot for supporting the plow-point C, substantially as described.
4. The slantingl land-sidc l*islopiu'g inward from its top to bottom edge, in combinatioa with thc plow-point C and coltcr D, the said colter and plow-point seated directbY againstthc forward edge ol the incid-beard through its entire lengt-li, substantiall5- as and for the piirposo described.
in witness whercoi` I hereunto set my hand this .lith day of J une7 A. l). 1.87
