Description
UNITED. STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. TWICKERSIAM, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING BE'DSTEADS.,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,460, dated J une 2, 1857; Reissue No. l,l0l, dated December 18, 1.860.
To all whom it may concern: A
Beit knowitthat I, J onN B. WIcKERsnAM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, iliade, and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in Folding or Portable Iron Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is -a full,
.clear, and exact description of the construction .C
and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of vation ofthe inner side of one of thc legs. Fig.
4 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan ofthe bedstead as opened 'for use.
Similarmarks of reference denote the same parts.
Metallic bedsteads have been constructed in such a manner as to fold up, and to show the distinction between my construction of bedstead and others, I will brielly describe the parts that have been employed before my said invention.
A short projecting bar or plate with two holes has heretofore been riveted onto each post of the bedstead and each of the horizontal rails has been provided with two similar holes. Through the end holes a. tie-rod has been passed that became a centerpin on which to fold up the bed'stead, and then by the insertion of a pin through therespective pairs of conciding holes the bedstead has been retained in an unfolded position; but this construction involved diiculties and was unreliable; diicult on account of getting the holes for the pins to niateh,'particularly when the bedstead gets bent or twisted, as is often the case; unreliable because'all the strain comes on the pins, and the bedstead falls down unless the pins are inserted.- The pins have also been thrown in by springs; but the saine objections apply to this method, and the cost is' considerably enhanced.
The nature of .one portion of mysaid invention consists in forming a shoulder or support in each corner-post, receiving the horizontal rails when the bedstead is opened, in combination with a pin insertedover the rail, whereby the wei ght and strain are taken on said shoul der or support of the post, and thejoint-pin and movable pin relieved of the same, and no difficulty arises in introducing the pin, because the side rails are supported and the bedstead will stand, even without inserting the movable pins, thereby greatly facilitating the insertion or withdrawal of the pins in folding or unl'old- 'ing the bedstead.
The bedstead is to be of any width or length, andthe parts maybe formed more or less ornamental.
A A are the metallic post connected by rods l and 2, to forln either the head or foot guard. B l1 are the side rails jointed at 3 and 4 tothe short legs Ll in the usual manner, so that when unfolded the square points of the shoulders abut against said leg and retain the samea is a shoulder or support formed are movable pins inserted through eorresponding holes above the rails B, where the bedstead is in an unfolded position, to confine said rails to the shoulder a, and the upper part of the rails B may be slightly notched to pass the `said pinor not, provided the casting of the selves, thereby avoiding the use of a second cross-bar at this point, which was in use for this purpose before my present invention.
I do not claim to be the first inventor of 'a folding bedstead neither do I claim securing the side rails by the insertion ot' a pin through twol holes; but
' What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- 2. The pins 5, inserted as set forth, in oomters Patent, is'-, vbnat'onwiththestopsorsnnports,ns'specified.
v 1 Determining the relative position of thev JOHN B. VWICK ERSHAM. lhead or foot gna-rds with the side rails when Wit- -tlie bedstead is inan unfolded position by`v nesm means of a. stop or support snbstzmtially as LEMUEL W. SERRELL, Y specified. i CHA'S. H. SMITH.
