Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Salvia plant named ‘DSALSYFBN’ is disclosed, characterized by abundant flowering, deep violet-blue flowers with violet sepals. Upright plants, flowering from early spring to late autumn. The new variety is a Salvia, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Salvia farinacea.
Variety denomination: ‘DSALSYFBN’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new Salvia cultivar is the product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Salvia varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The crossing resulting in this new variety was made in 2014.
The seed parent is the unpatented, unnamed proprietary Salvia farinacea ‘SAF-9-971’. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open-pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in June 2015 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2014 open-pollination, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in July 2015, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DSALSYFBN’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DSALSYFBN’ as a new and distinct Salvia cultivar:
    • 1. Short inflorescence internodes.
    • 2. Abundant flowering stems.
PARENTAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ differ in the following:
    • 1. Flower color of the new variety is violet-blue, while the flower color of the seed parent is white.
    • 2. Peduncles of the new variety are shorter than peduncles of the seed parent.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISONS
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ are comparable to the commercial variety Salvia ‘Sallyfun Blue Emotion’, unpatented. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALSYFBN’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Plants of the new variety are more compact than plants of this comparator.
    • 2. The new variety produces more flower stems than this comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ can also be comparable to the unpatented commercial variety Salvia ‘Sallyfun Blue Ice’. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALSYFBN’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Flower stems of the new variety are dark blue, while the flower stems of this comparator are white.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALSYFBN’ can also be comparable to the commercial variety Salvia ‘DSALDPOCN’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,121. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALSYFBN’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Foliage of the new variety is smaller than foliage of this comparator.
    • 2. Main lip color of the new variety is Violet N89B; main lip color of this comparator is Violet-Blue 93C.
    • 3. Sepal color of the new variety is Violet N89B; sepal color of this comparator is Violet-Blue 93A.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DSALSYFBN’ grown in 25 cm pot outdoors in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. Age of the plant photographed is approximately 4 months from a rooted cutting.
FIG. 2 illustrates a close-up view of typical inflorescences.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
