Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Salvia plant named ‘DSALDRKMTR’ is disclosed, characterized by large, dark blue flowers. The new variety is a Salvia, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Salvia nemorosa.
Variety denomination: ‘DSALDRKMTR’.
The new Salvia cultivar is the product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Salvia varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The open pollination resulting in this new variety was made in 2017.
The seed parent is an unpatented, unnamed proprietary Salvia nemerosa ‘SAN-13-2959’. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in May 2018 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2017 open pollination, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by terminal vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in September 2018, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
The cultivar ‘DSALDRKMTR’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DSALDRKMTR’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DSALDRKMTR’ as a new and distinct Salvia cultivar:
-
- 1. Large flowers.
- 2. Dark blue flowers.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALDRKMTR’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALDRKMTR’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Leaves of the new variety are entire; leaves of the seed parent are lobed.
- 2. Flower color of the new variety is a darker blue than the flower color of the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALDRKMTR’ are comparable to the commercial variety Salvia ‘DSALAXBL’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 32,919. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALDRKMTR’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. Flowers of the new variety are larger than the flowers of this comparator.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are larger than leaves of this comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALDRKMTR’ can also be comparable to the commercial variety Salvia ‘DSALRS203’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,520. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALDRKMTR’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. Flower color of the new variety is a darker blue than the flower color of this comparator.
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are smaller than the leaves of this comparator.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DSALDRKMTR’ grown in 25 cm pot outdoors in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2005, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DSALDRKMTR’ plants grown from autumn to spring in moderate climate in a greenhouse, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
