Abstract
A new and distinct Salvia cultivar named ‘DSALMAGWAN’ is disclosed, characterized by a sturdy plant form that remains upright, resisting lodging. Flowering occurs continuously from Spring to Fall and plants exhibit great performance in heat and humidity. The new variety is a Salvia, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Salvia hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘DSALMAGWAN’.
The new Salvia cultivar is the product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Salvia varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The open pollination resulting in this new variety was made during 2011.
The seed parent is an, unpatented, unnamed proprietary Salvia hybrida. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in May of 2012 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2011 open pollination, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in May of 2012 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
The cultivar ‘DSALMAGWAN’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DSALMAGWAN’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DSALMAGWAN’ as a new and distinct Salvia cultivar:

- 1. Sturdy plant remains upright without falling open, resisting lodging.
- 2. The new variety blooms constantly from Spring through Fall
- 3. The new variety has great performance in heat and humidity
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALMAGWAN’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALMAGWAN’ differ in the following;

- 1. The new variety has a more compact habit than the seed parent.
- 2. The new variety has a darker flower color.
- 3. The new variety has a shorter flower inflorescence.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALMAGWAN’ are comparable to the unpatented commercial variety Salvia ‘Indigo Spires’. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALMAGWAN’ differs in the following:

- 1. The new variety has a more compact and spreading habit compared to ‘Indigo Spires’.
- 2. The new variety has more inflorescences per plant than ‘Indigo Spires’.
- 3. The new variety has a shorter inflorescence than ‘Indigo Spires’.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DSALMAGWAN’ can also be comparable to the unpatented commercial variety Salvia ‘DANSALFUN1’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 19,788. The two Salvia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DSALMAGWAN’ differs in the following:

- 1. The new variety has larger flowers than ‘DANSALFUN1’.
- 2. The new variety grows more vigorously than ‘DANSALFUN1’
- 3. The new variety has darker violet colored flowers than ‘DANSALFUN1’, which has lighter violet flowers.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DSALMAGWAN’ grown in 15 cm pots outdoors in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2005 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DSALMAGWAN’ plants grown in the Autumn, to Spring in moderate climate in a greenhouse, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. during the night. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
- Botanical classification: Salvia hybrida ‘DSALMAGWAN’.
- Type of propagation typically used: Vegetative cutting.
- Time to initiate roots: 6-8 days at approximately 18-24° C.
- Time to produce a rooted cutting: About 14 days at 18-24° C.
- Root description: Moderately dense and fibrous. Medium brown in color, not accurately measured with R.H.S. chart.
- Overall plant shape or growth habit: Compact, spreading and upright.
- Plant spread: Approximately 50 cm.
- Plant height: Approximately 50 cm.
