Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant named ‘Sunparadai’, characterized by its upright and vining plant habit; relatively small glossy foliage; freely branching habit; freely flowering habit; dark red purple-colored flowers; and long flowering period.
Description
Botanical designation: Mandevilla hybrida.
Cultivar denomination: ‘Sunparadai’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla, botanically known as Mandevilla hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Sunparadai’.
The new Mandevilla is a naturally-occurring branch mutation of the Mandevilla hybrida cultivar Sunmandecrim, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 15,539. The new Mandevilla was discovered and selected by the Inventor from within a population of plants of the cultivar Sunmandecrim in a controlled environment in Amstelveen, The Netherlands in May, 2005.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by cuttings in Leimuiderbrug, The Netherlands, since June, 2005, has shown that the unique features of this new Mandevilla are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the cultivar Sunparadai have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Sunparadai’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Sunparadai’ as a new and distinct cultivar:

- 1. Upright and vining plant habit.
- 2. Relatively small glossy foliage.
- 3. Freely branching habit.
- 4. Freely flowering habit.
- 5. Dark red purple-colored flowers.
- 6. Long flowering period.
Plants of the new Mandevilla differ from plants of the parent, the cultivar Sunmandecrim, in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Mandevilla have shorter stems with shorter internodes than plants of the cultivar Sunmandecrim.
- 2. Plants of the new Mandevilla have larger leaves than plants of the cultivar Sunmandecrim.
- 3. Plants of the new Mandevilla have larger flowers than plants of the cultivar Sunmandecrim.
- 4. Plants of the new Mandevilla and the cultivar Sunmandecrim differ in flower color as plants of the cultivar Sunmandecrim have red-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the Mandevilla cultivar Sunparasuji, disclosed in a U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 12/079,407. Plants of the new Mandevilla differ primarily from plants of the cultivar Sunparasuji in flower color as plants of the cultivar Sunparasuji have red-colored flowers with white-colored stripes.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Mandevilla.
The photograph at the top of the sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Sunparadai’ grown in a container.
The photograph at the bottom of the sheet is a close-up view of a typical flower of ‘Sunparadai’.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Plants used for the aforementioned photographs and following description were grown under conditions which closely approximate commercial production conditions during the late summer in an outdoor nursery in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan for about four months. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 25° C. and night temperatures averaged 15° C.
