[Term of Patent 7 years] To all Iwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, ROBERT SCOTT and AARON J EWELL, both of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew Design for Fancy VVOrsted or Woolen Fabrics and we do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The whole surface of the fabric is divided into sui-all squares by tl1read-lines a, which give to the said squares a raised appearance, and the surfaces of the squares are shaded by diagonal lines in the manner following. A succession of squares in longitudinal and transverse lines, a certain and regular distance apart, are diagonally shaded in the saine direction, and form longitudinal and transverse stripes A A', which inclose in the form of a square, B, four of the smaller squares. These inclosed small squares are shaded by diagonal lines Whose direction is opposite to that of the shade-lines of squares forming the stripes, the said shade-lines of the inclosed squares being more prominent than those of stripe squares, thereby giving a marked effect to the surface of the goods.
The fabric may be Woven in any preferred variety or combination of colors for giving effect to the design above described, the characteristic feature of which is the combination of small diagonally-shaded squares, as described and shown.
