Description

026-144 AU 291 x DESIGN.
C. HEBTER.
Gasatier. No, 8,748, Patented0ct.26.1875.
UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN HERTER, or NEW YORK, x, Y.
DESIGN FOR GASALIERSI'",
Specification forming part of Design No. 8,748, dated October 26, 1875;
[Term of Patent 31; years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHRISTIAN HERTER, of the city of New York, N. Y., have invented a Design for a Gasalier, of which the following is a specification The photographic illustration shows the nature of the design, as a whole, and divers of its elements. The drawing, marked Figure 2, shows, especially, the horizontal plate K.
A is a canopy of a shape analogous to a section of a sphere, which is ornamented by a saw-pierced design of any appropriate character. At intervals upon the edge of the canopy A are the pipes B, in the present instance six in number, which depend vertically terminating in loops, through which passes' the continuous pipe 0, that alternately ascends and descends, its lower angles being carried under the horizontal projecting pipes I), at the extremities of which are the vases E, hereinafter described. The edge of the canopy A is decorated by a rim of open-work, immediately below which are the medallions H I, that are secured in place between the ascending and descending parts of the pipe 0 by means of connections with said pipe and rosettes, arranged substantially as shown in the illustration.
The medallions H and I are of oblong and circular form, respectively, both consisting of an open-work design of vines and flowers, and bearing the figure of a bird flying. They are applied with relation to each other, and the other parts and elements of the gasalier, substantially as shown in the illustration.
At about the plane that touches the lower angles of the pipe 0 is a horizontal plate, K, the shape of which is clearly shown in Fig. 2. It is enriched by an open design of vines and flowers, and has attached to its exterior projections the forms P, hereinafter described, above which are the horizontal pipes or arms D, which sustain the vases or pots E, the crowns of the inverted half-globes M being held between the projecting parts of the plate K. A spherical section of the plate K, the diameter of which corresponds nearly or about with the diameter of the canopy A, is removed and the vertical ring N attached at its upper edge to the interior rim. The ring N is entiched by an open design, the same in all application filed September 27, 1 875.
material respects as that of the plate K, and is carried downward and adapted to support the large inverted central half-globe O, the lower part of which is finished with a circular form and ring.
The vases or pets E are of a form analogous to a spheroid, their upper parts terminating in a pipe, which is extended upward, and provided with a globe-rest, being appropriately ornamented in harmony with the other features of the gasalier. ()n the outer side of the vases or pots is the form of a conventional bird in flat relief, the head of which is carried up, the wings partly extended and thrown back, and the leg and claw drawn under and in contact with the form P, hereinafter described. The head, wings, and leg and claw are fully modeled, and the whole arranged as shown in the illustration.
The form P is composed of a medallion, above and below which are stems, the upper stem terminating in an outer projection of the plate K, and the lower in a rosette, near which it is attached to the ring N, the form being curved or bent, as shown.
In the present instance, in addition to the central half-globe, six elevated burners, and six half-globes, with the divers features and elements that are incidental thereto, are employed but I do not regard the exact number shown as essential, as it may be varied without changing the effect of the design.
It is manifest, too, that the open-work may be changed, and other minor details of ornamentation, without departing from the design as shown.
I do not claim herein the ring N, nor any of the other elements of the design, except as hereinafter specified, the said ring being shown in a certain application for Letters Patent of the United States heretofore made by me, and pending at the date hereof, and certain other features being shown in other applications for Letters Patent heretofore made by me.
What I claim as my invention and production, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-

4. The design of the plate K, substantially as shown and described.
5. The design of the vases or pots E, substantially as shown and described.
6. The design of the forms P, arranged with relation to the plate K, substantially as shown and described.
