DESIGN FOR TYPE.

Specification forming part of Design No. 5,507, dated February 6, 1872.

I, ANDREW GILBERT, of Boston, inthe conn ty of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Faces of Types, representing the letters of the English alphabet-two sets-also the Arabic numerals, of which the following is a specication:

In the drawing are seen the letters of two alphabets, both of the same design, one representing the capitals, and the other the small, or technically, the lower-case7 letters; also, as mentioned above, the numerals.

This style of letters is called in the trade f light Gothic italic.77 The letters are what are called block letters, being of that class of type in which*7 in the capitals, the curved, diagonal, and horizontal lines are of the same Width as the upright lines 5 and their peculiar distinctive character consists in their being italic, or leaning to the right; that they are block letters, and that all the lines composing them, in the capitals, are light or narrow.

.I do not claim this peculiar character of type when the lines of the capitals are heavier or Ylighter than are shown in my drawing; but the lower-case7 letters I especially claim, as no types of that character have, so far as I know, ever been made.
