Description
diritti gister JOSIAH LETOHWORTH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Design N o. 4,202, dated July 5, 1870.
DESIGN FOR A TRACE-SUPPORTING STUD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, Josmn Ln'ronwoirrn, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented and produced a certain new and original De sign for a Trace-supporting Stud for Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My design relates to a trace-support of peculiar construction, invented by me, which is attached to the back strap over the horses hip to support and keep the traces oi of the ground, when they are detached from the whiiiietree.
Itis composed of a plate, provided with slo'ts or loops at its edges for the attachment of the backstrap, cru pper, and lazy straps, from the center of which plate projects upward a stud or pin, over which are engaged the cock-eyes at the end of traces.
The design, as shown in the drawings, consists in constructing the central part of such or similar catches of. the shape and figure ot' a horses head, which not only constitutes a handsome and appropriate ornament for the place it is designed to occupy, but the form of the device, owing to the projection of the nose, ears, and mane, is such as to render it peculiarly adapted to prevent the accidental disengagement of the cockeyes therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings- Iigure I represents a side elevation of my design, an
Figure II, a plan thereof.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures.
A is the plate of my improved catch, cast with four loops, b c d d, for the respective attachment thereto ofthe back-strap, crupper, and lazy straps of the harness.
h lis the central projection, representing a horses The shank h of the device, below the mane fi, may he made round, or nearly so, and should be of sutiicient height to permit of the arrangement thereon, one above the other, of the two cock-eyes at the end of the traces.
The part representing the mane should be constructed to project backward, so as to form a shoulder, as shown in the drawings at i.
The catch being attached to the harness with the face of the design in front, the cock-eye is engaged over the device II by holding the trace with the cockeye toward the front, which is passed over it in an obvious manner, the natural shape of the head, with the tapering form of the back or mane portion on the device, conforming, to a certain degree, with the shape ofthe opening of the cock-eye, as the latter is being arranged thereon iu the manner just described.
By making the device H of a size to barely permit of the engagement of the cock-eye, the peculiar form of the device, with the mane project-ing at the rear, the nose in front, and the ears at the top, in connection with the position which the cock-eye naturally assumes, after it is arranged over it, is such as to render it almost impossible for the cock-eye to become accidentally disengaged, which can only be accomplished by a reversal ot the peculiar movement by which it was connected therewith.
I claim as my invention- The design of a horses head for the top ot' a tracesupporting stud, as hereinbefore shown and described.
J OSIAH LETOHWORTH.
