THOMAS NILSON MARTIN, OF CHEYENNE, WYOMING, ASSIGNOR OFONE- THIRD TO ULYSSES G. DRUMMOND, OF SAME PLACE.
HALTER SQUARE OR CORNER-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `ilatent No. 524,067, dated August 7, 1894. I Application tiled March 10, 1894. Serial No. 503,I'74. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS NILsoN MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramieand State of Wyoming, have invented a new and useful 'Halter Square or Corner-Clasp, of which the ing the ends of the nose band and cheek pieces together, and also for properly positioning the chin strap of the halter in order to prevent the sagging thereof, and to keep the same practically snug and tight.
To this end the main and primary object of 'the present invention is to provide an improved halter square or clasp which will proporly position and connect together the ends of the halter referred to with the greatest possible economy and saving of leather.
With theseand other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated andclaimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure-l is a side elevation of a halter attached to a horses head and showing my improved square or corner clasp joining the meeting ends of the nose strap and cheek pieces. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of a halter including the herein described improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail' sectional View on the line axof Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the trimming unconnected with the halter straps.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the halter of the ordinary construction having the side pieces B, the nose band C, and the chin strap D, and the meeting ends of the cheek pieces B, and the nose band C, are to be connected together to complete the halter, and in the present invention the said parts of the halter are received and fastened together by the halter square or clasp E.
of the metal plate, forming the square or clasp, the same is provided with the olf-standing inwardly extending rectangular loop F,
which is adapted to receive one end of the nose band C, which passes through this loop at the rear side of the ysquare or clasp plate E, and`extends to the opposite' side edge of the plate from that where the loop F, is located. The end of the nose band which passes through the loop F, at the rear side of the plate E, is firmly secured by the side rivet G, passing through the plate E, and the end of the nose band near the loop F. At the top edge of the Asquare or clasp plate E, the same is also provided with an off-standing inwardly extending rectangular loop H, similar iny construction and disposition to the loop F,-but is adapted to receive the lower end of a side cheek piece B, of the halter, and such cheek piece or strap also extendsxat the rear side of the plate E, to the lower edge of said plate and overlaps the end of the nose band C, at the'farthest or rear corner of the halter square or clasp with respect to the front of the halter. It will of course be understood that the overlapping and positioning of the nose band and cheek pieces of the halter may be reversed, and on the inner side of the plate E, in from the loop through which the overlapping strap passes is projected the transverse lugl, which serves to hold that particular strap in proper position for overlapping the other strap, and the cheek piece referred to is secured to the square or clasp plate E, in a similar manner to the nose baud by means of the v`top rivet I, passing through the plate and said cheek piece, and the overlapped ends of the strap are securely connected together and fastened firmly to the plate E, by means of the connecting rivet J, passing therethrough and also through said. overlapped ends of the ,halter strap, and this provides a permanent fastening for the strap ends, the halter being adjusted in the usual way by means of the chin strap D.
At one side edge opposite to the rectangular loop F, the square or clasp plate E, is prol vided with an attaching eye or loop K, the
opening therein being preferably rectangular and is located in a line with thelength of the plate and is disposed in a plane parallel with the disposition of the loop F. The attaching eye or loop K, is adapted to receive one end of the chin strap D, which completes the halter fastening. It is to be observed that the attaching eye or loop K, is extended in a direct line rearwardly from the square or clasp plate E, and by reason of this disposition, the chin strap is necessarily held in a position which causes the same to pass around under the chin of a horse on the same horizontal plane as the nose strap and at direct right angles to the head stall or crown strap, which makes the halter not only set much better, but also holds the same snug and tight on the animals head. l
From the above it will be seen that I have provided an improved halter trimming,r which not only economizes on the material of which the halter is made, but at the same time assists in giving the proper set or tit thereto.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details ot' construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
The herein described halter square or cori ner clasp the same consisting of a flat metal plate provided at the top and one side edge with integral oit-standing rectangular loops H and F, projected from the inner side of the plate and adapted to respectively receive the "end of a halter cheek piece and nose band Which overlap at the rear side of said plate, at the opposite side edge with au attaching eye or loop K, projected ott from the body of the plate in a direct line with and in a plane parallel to the opposite oft-standing loop F, to receive one end of the halter chin strap and to hold such chin strap in alignment with the nose band, and on the inner side below the top loop l-I, with a projected transverse lug I, and rivets passed singly through the plate and the nose band and cheek piece, and also through the overlapped ends of these parts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signature in the presence ot' two witnesses.
THOMAS NILSON MARTIN.
