UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUS'JUS J. KEIL, OF NE\VARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE VVIIITEIIEAD d: HOAG COMPANY, OF NEW' JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 32,607, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed February 6, 1900, Serial No.4,287. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS J. KEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for a Badge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked the reon,which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings,- Figure 1 represents a front view of the badge embodying the leading features of my new design, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
My novel design for a badge consists of an ornamental headpiece or bar, depending chains, and an ornamental medallion or pendant connected with said chains, the said headpiece or bar and the said medallion both having an ornamental marginal configuration as well as surface ornamentations, and the beauty and effect of this design are therefore due to these features;
Referring to said views, a is the headpiece or bar, which is of a rectangular shape, its main body portion a being raised, as shown, and having the outwardly-tapering surfaces 0, which surround the said raised portion. The said raised portion is also ornamented with meridian lines a and lines of latitude a", dividing the central portion of the headpiece or bar a into zones or belts, the whole beinga representation of the earth,with its upper and lower edges projecting, respectively, above and below the longer edges or sides of the headpiece or bar a. The said representation of the earth is further enhanced by an ornamentation representing a tent, as a", with its folds adjacent to the entrance of the tent represented partly open, and beneath the tent is a representation of grass, as a. The lower marginal and curved ed e of the said representation of the earth, which extends below the longer marginal edge of the headpiece or bar a, is further ornamented with a central ball or sphere a and oppositely-extending scroll ornamentations a and a, which terminate against the said lower edge of the headpiece or bar a and form a portion of the lower tapering surface of said bar contiguous to the circular edge of the earth, as shown. Contiguous to the upper circular portion of said representation of the earth on opposite sides of the same and partly arranged upon the upper tapering surface of the said headpiece or bar a and partly extending above the edge of its longer and upper edge are scroll ornamentations a and a, said ornamentations a having the appearance of being formed on the back of said headpiece or bar a and extending above the same and then down upon the said upper tapering surface of the bar, forming a complete and distinct ornamentation with the said ornamentations u". The shorter edges of said headpiece or bar a are enhanced by scrolls a, which are inwardly curved, with their lower portions etitending outwardly, as shown, and the lower corners of the said headpiece or bar a are provided with downwardly extendingand curved ornamentations a, the ends of which form a part of the tapering surfaces of the shorter sides and the lower edge of the headpiece or bar, providing at the same time certain ornamental openings a, from which depend ornamental chains b, all asillustrated. Connected with the lower ends of the chains Z) is an or namental medallion or pendant c. Said medallion or pendant is of a circular disk shape, provided at the top with a shield ornamentation 0'. On either side of the said shield c and forming a portion of the annular edge of the said medallion or pendant are crossed scrolls c and also a pair of outwardlycurved scrolls 0 which form, with the main disk shaped portion of the medallion, ornamental openings 0 for the reception of the ends of the chains ba The remaining portions of the annular edge of said disk is ornamented by a wreath of leaves, as 0 The main central ,portion of the medallion or pendant is formed with a raised convex surface 0 ornamented with the representation of a temple. The said central convex surface is bounded by a slightly-raised annular part c and a circular ornamentation of beads 0 'At the lower portion of the annular edge of the disk-shaped medallion or pendant cis an ornamental band 0 beneath which the lower end portions of the wreath-like ornamentations end.
The essential. features of my novel design eonsist in the general ornamentation of the headpiece or top bar (a and that ol the memodallion c and, furthermore, in the general arrangement of. the headpiece, depending ehains, and medallion or pendant connected therewith and in the outline, configuration, and surface ornamentation of these several parts eon'iprisii'ig a complete design for a badge to insure the general effect and beauty oi the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The design for a badge, substantially as herein described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above l have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of February, 1900.
AUGUSTUS J'. NEIL.
