UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. LOYRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE PLANTERS (IOMPRESS COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A HEAD-PLATE FOR COTTON-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 32,195, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed Oc ober 2,1899. Serial No. 732,411. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may COILCGJ'Ib:
Be it known that I, Chosen A. Lower, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Head-Plates for Cotton-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a head-plate for cottonpresses, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is :5 a broken view in section on the line i 4, Fig. 1,
looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a siniilarview on the line 5 5, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The leading features of my design consist in a head-plate having a smooth flat under surface and a top surface broken up or divided into ridges and depressions, the surface of the ridges being rounded, tapered, or beveled toward the bottoms of the depressions, slots or openings being formed at the bottoms of the depressions and the slots, ridges, and depressions occupying a general though not truly radial direction with reference to the center of the cap, the slots being more nearly 0 tangential to the center-that is, inclined relative to radii passing through the outer ends or extremities of the slots-thereby giving the impression to the eye when viewed in plan of a star-shaped figure slightly askew-that is,
with the points not presenting toward a single point as a center.
Reference-sign A designates generally the capplate, presenting a Hat surface on one side and a surface broken up or divided into chan- 0 nels or depressions and inter ening ridges.
B designates the slots at the bottoms of the channels or recesses, and O the ribs forming the ridges which intervene between adjacent channels or depressions. The ribs are beveled in opposite directions at their on ter ends, as shown at a h, Figs. 1 and 5, and are fiattened on top, as at c, midway approximately of its ends and through which flattened portion is a hole (1. From the flattened portion forwardly to their inner ends the ribs or ridges are formed tapering, and the sides are rounded or beveled, as at c f, thereby presenting the appearance generally of a slope or incline toward the slot B at the bottom of the depression or channel from each side thereof and the lips g h of the slot forming substantially a continuation of such sloping surface to a point midway the planes containing the top surface and the under surface, respectively, of the cap-plate, and from that point inwardly the surface of the lips are beveled or inclined in the opposite direction, thus producing to the eye the eifect of a slightly-rounded figure, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, the point of convergence of the upper and under surfaces of the lip it being more distinct and prominent than the corresponding point of the lip g. At the geometrical center of the figure formed by the longitudinal slots, ridges or ribs, and depressions is a fiat circular surface G, which extends over the inner ends of the slots and the beveled or inclined surfaces converging toward the slots.
What I claim is-- The design for a head-plate for cottonpresses, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this 27th day of September, 1899, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. LOWRY.
