CHAIN AND SPROCKET WHEEL GUARD FOR BICYGLES.
Patentad Nov. ZI. !899.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FRANK DOUGLA S, OF OHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
DESIGN FOR A CHAIN AND SPROCKET WHEEL GUARD FOR BICYCLES.
sPEcIFIoATroN forming part of Design No. 31,866, dated November 21, 1899; Application filed August 14, 1899. Serial No. '727,134. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom 't may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the County of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Chain and Sprocket-Wheel %hard for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accomparying drawings, showing the guard detached from a bicycle-frarne.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my guard without the clamp-fastenings for attaching it to the frame of a bicycle and shows the shape and design of the straight reach O, which terminates at its forward end in a curved cov- 'ering for the upper front teeth of a front sprocket-Wheel. The downcurved part B is the oontinnation of the cnrved sprocketcover back and down below the reach O and is made in angle form below the reach to cover the face and the enter side of the sprocketwheel teeth. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the reach C and shows its angle shape. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the curved part A, cut through at S S, and shows the cnrved and angular-shaped projection B over the back face of the sprocket-wheel below the reach O.
The leading features of my design consist in a light half-circle sprocket-cover with a tangential straight reach back over the chain, the whole in'an angle form to cover only the top and the outside of the upper line of chain and about the upper one half of a front sprocket-wheel. This gracefully designed guard covering only the upper chain and upper part of the sprocket-wheel is all the protection required to protect the Clothing of a rider andtakes the place of the cumber some and unsightly guards that extend below the lower ohain and are laced or connected by metal strips from the upperto the lower reach.
My guard is lightened by round and oblong openings in the outer side of the curved part and also by a triangnlar opening at the j uncton of the cnrved part A and the straight part C.
What is clained is- The design for a driving-chain and sprocketwheel guard for bicycles, as herein shown and described.
FRANK DOUGLAS.
