INVENTOI? p Y UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM E. GOLDING, OF WAKEFIELD, NEW YORK.
EXTENSION-G EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,932, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed July 28,1897. Serial No. 646,189. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GOLDING, of Wakefield, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extension- Gear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved extension-gear more especially designed for bicycle sprocket-Wheels and arranged to permita'convenient and secure attachment of an extension sprocketwheel on the one used on the machine.
The invention consists principally of a p sprocket-wheel rim formed with sprockets and having flanges on both sides engaging opposite faces of the sprocket-wheel on the machine.
The invention also consists of certain. parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out-in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front face View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear face view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of part of the improvement as applied and previous to forming the flange from one of the bosses on the rear face of the sprocket-wheel, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4.
The sprocket-wheel A on the machine and to be increased in size by the extension-gear is formed with the usual rim A and the teeth A as is plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The extension-gear is in the form of a circular rim B, formed on its inside with recesses B to fit laterally over the teeth A of the sprocketwheel A, the said rim being also provided with the usual teeth or sprockets B for engagement by the sprocket-chain.
On one face of the rim B are formed a plurality of flanges 13 each adapted to engage part of the rim A and the sides of the adjacent teeth A as is plainly shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, to prevent lateral movement of the rim B on the sprocket-wheel A in one direction. On the opposite face of the rim B, and preferably directly opposite the flanges B are formed bosses B adapted to pass between two adjacent teeth A of the wheel A when the rim is laterally applied on the sprocket Wheel, and the flanges B abut against one face of the said wheel. (See Fig. 5.)
When the rim B has been placed in position on the wheel A, as described, then the bosses with the sprockets or teeth A of the wheel A.
It is expressly understood that the device as manufactured and sold is formed on one face with the flanges B and on the opposite sides with only the bosses 13 so as to permit of conveniently placing the rim in position on the peripheral surface of the sprocketwheel-A, and when this has been done then the bosses B are formed into flanges by pressin g the same to lock the rim securely in place on the sprocket-wheel, so as to form an extension-gear for the same.
Havingthus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An extension-rim having a plurality of flanges on one face, and a plurality of bosses on the opposite face, the bosses being adapted to 'be formed into flanges, substantially as shown and described.
2. An extension-rim having a plurality of flanges on one face, and a plurality of bosses on the opposite face, the bosses being adapted to be formed into flanges, the said flanges and bosses being arranged one opposite the other,
as set forth.
