DESIGN.
A. HILDT.
QUILTED LINING. No. 16,993. Patented Nov. 23, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST HILDT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO L. DRYFOOS, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A QUILTED LlNlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16.993. dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed October 13, 1886. Serial No. 216,131.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUG us'r lliLn'r, a citizen of the United States, and a rcsidcntof the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Quilted Linings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My design is for the surface ornamentation ofthatclass of manufactured articles known as quilted linings or quiltings, orsoinetimes simply as linings, and employed for a variety of purposes not necessary to specify 5 herein.
In the accompanyingdrawing I have represented a fragment of a lining or fabric ornamented with lines of stitches arranged or grouped in accordance with my design, the
top, bottom, and one side being broken away to indicate that the surface of the fabric may be ofany desired extent, and this view is deemed to be sufficient for the purposes of the specification.
A represents the fabric or foundation upon which my design is tobe applied, and the dotted lines indicate the various lines of stitches, which are arranged or disposed so as to produce the desired design. These lines, for convenience of description, may be traced as follows: commencing at any point, as a, proceeding from the edge of A in an inclined direction to b, then in a direction parallel with the edge to c, then perpendicular to the edge 3 5 to d, again parallel with the edge to e, thence tof, to g, to h, to i, and so on to the limit of Term of patent 14 years.
the surface to be ornamented. Then the next line of stitches, commencing at k, is traced in a similar manner, the inclined, vertical, and horizontal portions being parallel with the 0 corresponding parts of the previously-traced line, as from It to c, c to l, l to m, m to d, d to g, and so on to the limit. By thus disposing the lines of stitching the ornamented surface is divided up into a series of parallelograms, as k a b c, d c f g, &c., and a series of rectangles; as b c (1.0, fg h i, the. The parallelograms are located in parallel rows separated by the adjacent rows of rectangles, and in any two consecutive rows of parallelograms the longer sides of the figures incline in opposite directions. The design affords parallel straight lines of stitching running in one direction, and across these, broken lines of stitching, as fully indicated in the drawing.
The sides or ends of the parallelograms may be of any desired length, as may also the sides or ends of the rectangles.
Having now fully described my design, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 6 Patent, is- The herein-described design for quilted linings, consisting ofthe fabric or foundation having the lines of stitches arranged thereon to form alternate rows of parallelograms and rectangles, with the shorter sides of the former adjacent to the sides of the latter, substantially as described.
AUG. HILDT.
