Description

OR D12 1839 Design No. 12,839, dated March 28, 18C2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VERNON F. PRENTIOE, Ol VVOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR AN UPRIGHT DRILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,839, dated March 28, 1852,
Application filed January 23, 1882. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON F. PRENTIOE, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Upright Drilling Machines; and Ideclare the following to be a description of my said do sign, suificiently i'ull, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which represents a.perspective view of a drillingmachine conforming to my new design.
The principal feature in my design is the peculiar form and proportions of the frame and the relative location thereon of the several operative parts to give a vigorous, graceful, and pleasing appearance to the machine.
a is the main cylindrical column, with its toot resting upon the elongated base-plate b, and having along its forward part, above the cylindrical bearing of the table 0, the vertical dovetailed guideway a. for the working-head e, while at the rear, and at a short distance away from said main column a, is the back standard, d, of elliptical sectional form, and standing parallel to said main column for a length correspondingto thelength of the guideway, or nearly so, and connected to the rear of the main column a by the transom-bars d at the upper and -lower extremities of the straight portion, as indicated. The lower portion of the back standard is divided to form two portions or limbs, g and h, that curve away from each other sufficiently to includetheconepulley dot" the counter and then descend and rest upon the bed-plate b, as shown, the bearings for the counter-shaft being on said parts g and h, near the bed-plate, and the drivingpulleys 02' located in rear of the limb h. An inclined cross bar or brace connects the curved portions of the limb gh above the cone 1. The
top of the frame is made with a forward-arched portion, o as a continuation of the cylindrical column a, which terminates with the up right bearing ed, that guides the drill-spindle and forms the seat for the spindle-operating gear above and cone-pulleys below, relatively located as shown. An arm, m, springs from above the back standard, 0?, with an outward and upward curve, as shown, for sustaining the rear bearing of the operating-shaft. The lower part of arm m broadens out to meet the arched poition a with a central upright, I, springing from their junction and rising to carry the center bearing of the operating-shaft, the conepullcys It and speed-gears being located in the space between the arms on and l, as illustrated. The front hearing, it, stands upon the top of the arch a This design imparts to the drilling machine graceful proportions, vigorous form, and a very pleasing and desirableornamentalappearance.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The design for an upright drilling machine hereinbet'ore described, the same consisting of the upright portions a a 11, divided rear loot, g h, and top portion composed of the forward arch, c arm I, and rear arnnm, formed and relatively disposed as shown.
2. The design for an upright drilling machine, the same consisting of the uprights a a 01, divided supports 9 h, resting on the bed 1), forward arch, a, and rear armfln, respectively formed and proportioned as shown, with the several operative mechanisms located and disposed in relation thereto in the manner illustrated and described.
Witness my hand this 10th day of January,
VERNON F. PRENTIGE.
Witnesses:
