MACHINE FOR EMBOSSING WOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,300, dated June 27, 1893.
Application filed May 17, 1892. Serial No. 433,326. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE STABER and HARTWELL ABBEY, citizens of the United 1 7 chine disclosed in the Letters Patent granted to us on May 12, 1891, No. 451,983.
The invention embodied in the said Letters Patent related more particularly to mechanism for holding the pressure roll up to or against the stock or work by the direct application of the force of a spring and to means for adjusting the pressure roll with respect to the design roller and for regulating the tension of the spring.
The general object of the present invention is to provide means for quickly and conveniently .adjusting the pressure roll with respect to the design roller, and for regulating the tension of the spring, and to the attainment of such object the invention consists in the peculiar construction, certain novel combinations and the adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

Referring by letter to said drawings, A, indicates the main frame of our improved machine which comprises the fixed base a, and the uprights or standards b, arranged in two pairs; one pair being on each side of the machine. These standards b, are provided adj acent to their upper ends with suitable bearings as c, for the trunnions d, of the design or die roller B, which is preferably held in position by the pivoted cap pieces 0, whereby it will be readily perceived that the said roll may be readily removed from its bearings when it is desired to change the design band B, or for any other purpose.
Fixed upon one of the trunnions d, of the roll B, is a gear wheel 6, with which meshes a pinion f, upon one end of the transverse shaft g, which is provided at its opposite end with a large gear wheel h. This large gear wheel 71, meshes in turn with an idler pinion i, which is loosely mounted upon a lateral shaftj, and is formed integral with or is fixed to a large gear wheel is, also fixedly mounted on the shaft j, which wheel 70, meshes with a pinion Z, on the drive shaft m, through the medium of which the roll B, is rotated by any suitable motor.
Mounted between the standards I), of the main frame A, are the vertically disposed end bars at, of the approximately yoke shaped and vertically movable frame F, in which end bars are journaled the trunnions of the pressure roll G, and suitably connected to the said end bars 11, are the similar side bars H, of the support or table for the stock, which is designed to extend on opposite sides of the machine, and which being secured with respect to the frame F, will adapt itself to the upper surface of the pressure roll G, by moving with the latter, and, being sustained alike under yielding pressure, will accommodate itself to the thickness of the stock. This support or table for the stock is provided, as better illustrated in'Fig. 1, of the drawings, with a latorally adjustable gage I, by means of which the stock may be guided between the die roll A, and the pressure roll G. I
In the center of the bridge or cross bar q, of the adjustable frame F, we provide a vertical aperture (not illustrated), through which passes the upper end of the vertical lifting rod or bar J, arranged in about the vertical center of the machine. This lifting rod or bar J, the upper portion of which is screw threaded as illustrated, takes loosely through the hole in the frame F, and the lower end of the rod or bar is passed through a hole in the base of the frame through which it is adapted to move vertically, the rod having a groove, as shown, into which takes a spline fixed in the hole of the base, whereby the said rod may be prevented from turning as a screw.
K, indicates a horizontally disposed beveled standards I). Journaled in gear wheel, which is provided with a central, vertical screw threaded aperture for the passage of the lifting rod J, and is designed to be rotated to raise and lower the frame F, and the pressure roll G, and M, indicates another horizontal, beveled gear wheel which is provided with a central, vertical screw threaded aperture for the passage of the lifting rod J, and is designed to be rotated to increase and diminish the tension of the spring L, which surrounds the bar or rod J, and bears at one end against the fixed base a, of the main frame and at its opposite end against the wheel M. The said wheel M, is provided upon its upper and lower sides with the central trunnions s, which are journaled in the inner ends of the supporting bracket arms 15, of the slide bar or block a, mounted between one pair of the this slide bar or block a, and extending on opposite sides thereof, is a shaft 1;, which is provided at its inner end with a beveled pinion w, in mesh with the gear wheel M; and this shaft '0, is provided at its outer end with a hand wheel at, through the medium of which it may be readily and conveniently rotated to raise and lower the wheel M.
Journaled in one of the end barsn, of the frame F, is a shaft (1, which is provided at its inner end with a beveled pinion b, in mesh with the wheel K, and is provided at its outer end with the hand wheel 0, through the medium of which it may be readily rotated to rotate the wheel K.
By the construction thus far described, it will be readilyperceived that a person standing at the side of the machine can quickly and conveniently vary the height of the frame F, and the pressure roll G, by turning the hand wheel 0, in the desired direction to raise or lower said frame and the pressure roll, according to the size of the stock to be fed, while the tension of the spring and the pressure of the roller G, can be quickly and conveniently regulated by turning the hand wheel 00, to rotate the wheel M; said wheel M, being lowered on the rod J, if it is desired to compress the spring and increase the tension, or raised when it is desired to expand the spring and reduce the pressure of the roller G, against the stock.
Inasmuch as various kinds of wood and other material of various thicknesses, are fed between the rollers B, and G, in rapid succession, it will be readily perceived that it is highly desirable to adjust the pressure roller and regulate the tension of the spring quickly and conveniently as described.
Having described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a machine for ornamenting wood and other material, the combination with the main frame, and a die roll and pressure roll; of a vertically slidable bearing for the latter roll, a threaded lifting rod disposed vertically and centrally beneath said roll, a spring surrounding the rod, a second vertically shdable bearing arranged in the frame beneath the first one, a horizontal bevel gear supported 1n brackets carried by the second slide bearing, said gear having a threaded bore to receive the threaded rod, a shaft journaled in the slide bearing and having a hand wheel at its outer end and a beveled pinion on its inner end to engage the teeth of the gear wheel, substantially as specified.
2. In a machine for embossing wood and other material, the combination with a design or die roll, a pressure roller,a vertically movable frame supporting the pressure roller, a threaded rod bearing in the main frame, a gear wheel having the central vertical threaded aperture for the passage of the threaded rod and adapted to support the movable frame, and a shaft journaled in the movable frame and carrying a pinion at its inner end in mesh with the gear wheel, and a hand wheel at its opposite or outer end; of the coiled spring surrounding the threaded rod and hearing at one end against the base of the frame, a gear wheel provided with a central vertical threaded aperture mounted on the threaded rod above the coiled spring, and having trunnions on its upperand lower sides, the bracket arms mounted on the trunnions and carrying the vertically movable slide bar at theirouter ends, and the shaft journaled in the said slide bar and carrying a pinion at its inner end in mesh with the gear wheel, and a hand wheel at its outer end, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
