SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,056, dated August 14, 1900. Application filed December 29,1399; Serial intrinsic. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. STEELE,of Statesville, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Brick-Presses,of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to brick-presses, and has for its object a press which will operate in an efficient manner and which is adapted drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved press, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 5.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line at 4: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a lever.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the main frame of my press, bolted or otherwise suitably secured upon the base B and provided with spaced-apart integral uprights A which form vertical guides for a cross-head D. The frame A is further provided with bear ings E, in which a shaft F is journaled, said shaft having keyed thereon two cams G,which are located within the cross-head D, at the sides thereof, and bear against upper and lower wear-plates H H, the rotation of the shaft F thereby efiecting a vertical reciprocation of the cross-head.
To the lower side of the cross-head D is bolted or otherwise firmly secured an upper plunger D, which is designed to fit in the top of a mold-box I, the said box being formed with steel linings J. In the bottom of this mold-box is fitted a lower plunger K,- which has astem K, extended through the bottom of the box and working in'a guide or hearing L, secured'to the bottom of the box, as seen in Fig. 2. The stem K of the plunger K engages with its lower end heavy fiat springs N, secured on a cross-bar M, whose ends work loosely in vertical slots 0 in the frame A, as shown in Fig. 1, and normally rest on adjusting-screws O, mounted in the frame, the said screws bearing the initial strain exerted'on the cross-bar M through the plunger K and also enabling the said plunger to be raised or lowered, according to the thick= ness of thebrick to be re-pressed.
Beyond the ends of the cross-bar M, which work in the slots 0, the said bar is formed with bearing-studs M, which are received in the lower ends of straps P P, secured to the cross-head D, and rest upon adjusting-screws P working in the bottom of the straps.
I On one end of the main shaft F is keyed the main gear-wheel B which is meshed with a pinion B, keyed on one end of the drivingshaft A journaled in bearings C cast in the main frame A. On the other end of the driving-shaft A is fastened belt-pulley A, adapted for connection with any suitable source of power. (Not shown.)
To feed the bricks to the mold-box, a feedtable 0 is provided, on a level with the top of the box, and a feed-block V is adapted to be reciprocated over the table. For such purpose the said feed-block is secured to the bent end of a rod U fitted to slide in bearings U U and operated by an arm T secured to the rod as shown, a link S is adj ustably secured by lock-nuts, whereby to adjust the feed, and a lever B, which latter is pivoted at its upper end on a pin R, extends from an upright A as shown in Fig. 2, and has an approximately-elliptical guideway Q, in which works an eccentric Q, held by set-screws on the end of the shaft F.
Below the cross-bar M a shaft E is journaled in the frame A, said shaft being pro vided with bearing-lugs E E, which are adapted to engage with and raise the crossbar M andthe lower plunger K. This operation occurs simultaneously with the downward pressure of the upper plunger D by means of an arm E, keyed to the end of the shaft E and pushed forward by a pin B on the gear-wheel B The weight of the crossbar M brings the arm E and shaft E back to normal position. In the feed-table O is an oil-chamber in which runs an oil-roller F to oil the bottoms of the bricks as they are passed over it, while above the table is an oil-roller F for oiling the tops of the bricks, the oil be= ing fed to this latter roller from a tank F livery-table C through the pipe F", which is provided with stop-cocks at its lower end to regulate the drip of the oil on the rollers.
C designates the deliverytable for the pressed bricks.
In the practical operation of my press the brick to be pressed is placed on the feed-table C in front of the feed-block V. Vhen the main shaft rotates, the eccentric Q acts on the lever R and concomitant parts, and the feed-block thus pushes the brick into the moldbox I at the time the cross-head D is near the top of its stroke. As the cross-head and the upper plunger move downwardly into the mold to give the pressure on the top of the brick the feed-block is pushed back to its original position ready foranother brick. It should be noted in this connection that the eccentric Q and guideway Q are of such shape that the feed-block V will move fast when near the end of the stroke and will come to a full stop at each end of the stroke. As the top pressure is being exerted on the brick by the downward movement of the cross-head, as above described, the arm E is being pushed by the pin 13 on the main gear B which by means of the bearing-lugs E E imparts an upward movement to the cross-bar M and effects a counter-pressure on the brick through the plunger K, whereby the brick is simultaneously pressed on both top and bottom. The upper plunger I) then begins to rise with the cross-head D, and when about one inch above the pressed brick the straps P P, connected to the cross-head D, engage with and raise the cross-bar M to such a height that the lower plunger K will push the pressed brick out of the mold-box. 1. In a brick-press, a framework, a moldbox in said framework, a vertically-reciprocable cross-head mounted in said framework above the mold-box, an operating-shaft extending through said cross-head and provided with cams located in the interior of said cross-head at each end of the same, whereby to reciprocate the latter, and a plunger secured to the bottom of said cross-head and adapted to work in the mold-box, as set forth.
2. In a brick-press, a framework, a moldbox in said framework, a vertically-reciprocable cross-head mounted in said framework and carrying a plunger adapted to fit in the mold-box, straps secured to and depending In a brick-press, a framework, a moldbox in said framework, a vertically-reciprocable cross-head in said framework carrying a plunger adapted to fit in said mold-box, a vertically-movable cross-bar in said framework carrying a plunger adapted to fit in the bottom of the mold-box, means for moving the cross-head and cross-bar toward each other, means for reversing the movement of said cross-head, and straps secured to said cross-head and having adjusting-screws in their lower ends, the ends of said cross-bar being arranged for engagement by said screws, as set forth.
4.. In a brick-press a framework provided with vertical spaced-apart uprights, a hollow cross-head guided vertically between said uprights, an operating-shaft inserted through the cross-head and provided on the interior of the latter with cams which are located at the ends of the cross-head and are adapted to raise and lower the same, an upper plunger secured to the bottom of the cross-head, a mold-box adapted to receive said plunger, a lower plunger moving in the bottom of the mold-box, straps secured to the cross-head and depending therefrom below the moldbox, a cross-bar adapted to raise the lower plunger and having its ends fitted in the straps, an operating-wheel on the said shaft, a shaft below the cross-bar and provided with bearing-lugs adapted to raise the crossbar in the straps, and an arm secured on said shaft and arranged for engagement by a pin 011 said wheel, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a brick-press the combination with the framework, the mold-box in said framework, the upper and lower plungers, independent mechanism for simultaneously moving said plungers toward each other and including a vertically-movable cross-bar, straps carried with the upper plunger and receiving in their lower ends the ends of the crossbar, whereby the upward movement of the upper plunger will raise the cross-bar and the lower plunger, and screws working in the lower ends of said straps in engagement with the ends of the cross-bar, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a press of the character described, the combination with the upper and lower plungers and the main operating-shaft for actuating said plungers, of a feed-table on which the bricks are fed between the p'lungers, a feed-block adapted to slide over the surface of said table, a horizontally-reciprocable rod having a bent end secured to said block, an eccentric on said operating-shaft, a lever piv oted above said shaft and having an ellip-.
tical seat or guideway receiving said eccentric whereby the lever is oscillated an arm secured to the horizontally-moving rod, and a link connecting the lower end of said lever with said arm, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a brick-press the combination with a framework provided with a mold-box, of upper and lower plungers arranged to move in said box, a feed-table adjacent the mouth of said box, a feed-block adapted to reciprocate on said feed-table, means for raising the lower plunger to a level with the mouth of the mold-box whereby to raise the pressed brick out of the box and a connection between the feed-block and the Operating means for depressing the lower plunger whereby the latter will be slightly below the mouth of the box as the feed-block pushes the brick therein, thereby causing a shoulder to be formed at the rearside of the mold-box so as to stop the incoming brick as and for the purpose set forth.
