PIPE-BENDING MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent.

T o all whomr it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FILLMORE Cox, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson. and
. State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pipe-Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved pipe bending machine which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which a pipe may be bent into segmental form without the use of an inner filling usually employed to prevent the changing of the cross sectional form of the bent portion of the pipe; and with this and. other objects in view the invention consists in a machine of the class speciiied constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom.
panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designatedl by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which F`gure l is a front side view of my improved pipe bending machine; Fig. 2 an end View thereof looking in the direction of the arrow of Fig. l Fig. 3 a partial horizonta section on the line of Fig. 2 Figa a par tial horizontal section on the line 4--4 of Fig. l Fig. 5 a partial vertical section on the line 5 5 of Fig. l and, Fig. 6 a partial vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. l.
ln the practice of my invention as shown in the drawing, l provide a main frame a having a top table (L2 provided at the right hand end with an extension a3, and said frame is provided with legs c4 connected by transverse end members c, and the extension a? of the table is also provided with a le or legs a, and the main frame c is provided at the front side thereof and at a predetermined distance below the table a2 with a horizontal plate member a7.
Mounted vertically in the main frame is a shaft l) having a sup ort or bearing in the frame member al, an said shaft passes4 vertically through the table a, and mounted on said shaft immediately above the table a2 is a circular bending block or wheel b3 having an annular groove ll, and the shaft t above the block or wheel b3 is threaded and provided with a nut b5. 'In the form of construction shown, that part of the shaft b on which the wheel or block b3 is mounted is angular in cross section as shown in Fig. 3, and they said wheel turns with said shaft, but said" block oi4 wheel may be secured to said shaft, so as to turn therewith, in any desired manner.
An arm c is also connected with the shaft b so as to turn therewith, and said arm in the normal position of the parts extends forwardly from said sha-ft, and is provided with a. longitudinal slot or opening c2, and mounted in said arm is a screw e3 provided at its forward end with a transverse head e4 having a handle c by which said screw may be turned in either direction. Mounted on' the screw c3, in the slot or opening e2 and extending above the arm c, is a die ci, the face of which, adj acent to the wheel or block b3 is provided with av horizontal groove c7 which corresponds with the groove l) in the wheel or block b3.
Mounted on the table a2 of the main frame and near the front edge thereof is a longitudinally movable slide d, andpivoted rearwardly of said slide as shown at d2 is a lever d3 which is also pivoted to the slide d at d4," and the connection of the slide d with the table a2 is preferably .made by means of a horizontal support d5 which is placed on said table and with which the slide d is connected by a tongue and groove connection as shown in Fig. 2, and connected with the rear side of the slide d is a die block d having a longitudinal segmental groove al7 in its rear face, which corresponds with the grooves el and b4 in thedie c6 and the wheel or block b3. The die block d is provided at one end with a transversely arranged arm d which is secured to the end of the slide d, and said die block d? is also connected with the slide d by a tongue and groove joint as shown, at d in Fig. 2. The main frame is also provided with a longitudinal `and vertically arranged hanger r1.8 through which the shaft l) passes, and secured. to,said shaft is a beveled gear Wheel e, and the hanger a8 at the right hand side of the shaft t is provided with a horizontal bearin a9 through which is passed a shaft e2 provide with a beveled gear wheel e3 which meshes with the gear Wheel e, and the shaft e2 is provided at its right hand endwith a worm gear wheel e provided with. an annular groove e5 in which the gear teeth of said wheel are the shaft l) is an arm q which is adapted to be adjusted on said -shaft to any desired position, and which operates in connection with.

Having inlly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zl.
