OR D 111698 EXAM-5ms y DESIGN.
S. HEITER & S. J. LESEM. Umbrella. Handle.

LLLWW gmc/OM 'elevation ofthe handle,
UNITED STATES` SIMON HEITER AND SALOMON PATENT OFFICE.
J. LEsEM, oF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 11,698, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed February 5, 1880. Term 0f patent 3i years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SIMON HEITER and SALOMON J. LEsEM, citizens of the United States, and both residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and Original Design for Parasol and Umbrella Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
The special feature of our design consists in a novel and peculiar volute ornamentation which forms the head of the handle.
In the accompanying drawing` is seen a side which clearly illustrates the features of our design.
a represents the straight portion of the handle, which may be round or of octagonal form, as preferred. Its upper part is bifurcated, as seen at I), one division, o, curving outward in a leaflike manner. The other section, d, extends up for a short distance, and takes a winding or volute-like conformation, as seen at c. A further elegant configuration is produced on the outer edge of this branch d by the gradual curves f f, resulting in the protuberl ance g with the attened apex h, which may have a slight convexity, if desired.
To add to the attractiveness of the design the circular outline or periphery of the volute may be caused to appear to the eye as slightly beveled; or, if ornamental carvings are placed on the surface, it will present an irregular and broken edge; but in either case the character of our design is not changed bysuch additional ornamentation.
Ve claim- 1. The design for an umbrella or parasol handle, consisting of the voluted and foliate Ornamentat-ions e c, forming the head, as described, and shown in the accompanying draw- In g.
2. The design for an umbrella or parasol handle, consisting of the branches c and d, forming volute and foliate ornamentation-s, substantialiy as described, and shown in the accompanying drawing.
