Description

MAURICE LANGHORNE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
Letters Patent No. 99,919, (lated February 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' LOCK-NUT;
l'he Schedule ieerred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it .may concern Be it known that I, MAURICE LANGHORNE, of the city and county of Washington, in the District of Oo lumhia, have invented a new and improved Nut-Loek; and I do hereby declare that the following is` a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation;
Figure 2, a longitudinal section;4 and Figure 3 is and end View.
This inventionfhas for its object to prevent the turning backof a'nut after ithas once been screwed on its bolt astightly as may be necessary in order to clamp the material through which the bolt passes.
I u the drawings- A A is an exteriorly-threaded bolt, having alongitudt nal groove, a, cut iu one side.
B is a washer, whose upper surface is serrated, so as to form ratchet.
The washer incluses the bolt A, and has a tongue, b, tig. 2, which enters the groove a, and so prevents the washer from turning on the bolt. Instead of 4the tongue b, the washer may be finished with a straight facet on its inner edge, the bolt A being finished with a corresponding facet. g
C is a nut, screwed upon the bolt A and provided with a spring-pawl, c, lig. 1, the same consisting, in
i this instance, of a wire in the shape of an inverted U,
whose legs pass through orifices iu the nut, one end being upset flush with the lower face of the nut, and the other end projecting below the said lower face. Hence, when the nut and washer are 4forced intoclose contact, by screwing the former upon the bolt and clamping the latter between the nut and the material through which thevbolt passes, the projecting end of the paw! c rubs over the ratchet, and, while the latter presents no obstacle to screwing the. nut on, it prevents the nut from-'turning backward accidentally.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. 'lhe combination ofa ratchet'washer with a-screwthreaded nut provided with a springdetent, substantially as and for the purpose speeiiied.` 2; 'lhe combination of aratchet-washer with ascrew- 'threaded nut provided with 'a spring-detent and with a screwthreaded bolt or axle, substantially as and for the object set forth.
ATo the above specification of my invention I have signed my hand this 18th day of January, 1870.
M. LAN GHORN E.
