Description
Nd'MoaeL P. A. GERRY. BOLT HAVING SLOTTED HEAD, SQUARED NEGK, THREADED SHARK,
AND SGREW NUT.
No. 452,640. Patented May 19, 1891 a) gar-v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERLEY A. GERRY, OF LAVVRENOE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOLT HAVING SLOTTED HEAD, SQUARED NECK, THREADED SHANK, AND SCREW-NUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,640, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed February 6, 1891. Serial No. 380.537. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERLEY A. GERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Bolt, of which the followingisaspecitication.
My improvement consists in the introduction of aslot in the head of a bolt; and it pertains, principally, to that class of bolts which are provided with a square shoulder immediately beneath the head, and also witha nut upon the threaded end thereof. Said bolts are variously designated as forelock, stop, tire, assembling, 850., these embracing the cone-headed elliptic rhomb with other common forms.
The object of my improvement is to facilitate the removal of such bolts from their position by the intervention of the screw-driver to prevent their rotation when removing or tightening the nuts in instances where the wood or other material surrounding the square shoulder on the body of the bolt has become worn to a degree that it offers no resistance to the abutting sides; or, as frequently occurs, said shoulder may be worn to an extent that its efficiency as a factor to secure the bolt from turning in its socket is impaired. In these instances the application of the screw-driver or any similar implement will hold the bolt in position until its nut is removed or secured. I consider, therefore, that these features-i. e., the slot and shoulder-cooperate to produce a new result which cannot be accomplished with the presentconstruction of said class of bolts in such instances as I have previously enumerated.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates the most common form of a shouldered bolt and nut with my improved slotted head. Fig. 2 indicates a top plan thereof. Fig. 3 showsa modified construction of the head, wherein two or more recesses are made to receive a spanner Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the bolt, the threaded portion of which is at B, retaining the nut O. The shoulder appears at D, immediately under the head-E, which is slotted, as appears at F, for the reception of a screw-driver, or may be pierced or recessed to receive a spanner, as at G.
In Fig. 4 I depict a common form of jointbolt, whereonthe shoulder D is omitted, which, however, is susceptible to my improvement, (seen at R) which facilitates the tightening of the nut C after the thread has ontered therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a bolt and nut, the combination of the slotted head thereof with the shoulder forming an integral part of the body of said bolt, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In a bolt provided with'a thread and nut, the abutting shoulder D, in combination with a head E, provided with a slot F or recesses G, adapted to receive an implement to immovably secure said bolt in'the operation of removing or securing said nut, as herein set forth. J
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificatiomin the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 27th day of January,A. D. 1891.
PERLEY A. GERRY.
