To all whom 'it may concern Be itrknown that I, ARTHUR W. DORR, of Lake l Valley, in the county of El Dorado, vand State of Gal- ,i'omia, have invented a new and improved Device for Checking Timber for the manufacture of staves, claphoards, 86e.; yand I do' hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which `will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, ,rejerence heing had to the accompanying draw- 'ingsand to the letters of reference markedlthereon.

This invention relates to a new'and improved de- .vice for checking timber for the manufacture or riving of stave-s, shingles, claphoards, &c., and is more especially designed for the useof frontier men; .most alti- `cles of the kind'specified being made by hand for local use in the frontier sections'.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 `is a face view of my invention.

One side of the stock A extends down and forms a knife or cutter, b, and c is a similar cutter, the ends of which are connected by springs d d, to the ends of the knife or cutter b, as shown clearly in tig. 1.

The cutter c is a movable one; that is to say, it is not rigidly connected to the stock A, but is allowed to move laterally.

Between these two knives or cutters b cthere vare placed three knives or cutters e, which are provided with a rib, f, at their upper end, the ends of the ribs iitting in the grooves a in the heads. v 'lhese` ribs should he of such a thickness as to keep the cutters at the required distance apart, and it will beseen that with the number ot' cutters shown in g.1,fourstaves, shingles or clapboards, or shocks, for any purpose, may be checked at once from bolts furnished or gotten out in the ordinary way.

'lhe springs cZ-d admit ot' the spreading of. the knives as the latter are driven intothe lends of the wood, and draw them hack to theirforiginal position when the cutters are knocked out of the wood.

By this simple device the shocks mayall be checked of a uniform thickness.
