Description

mtmmedf N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHEE, WASHINGTON. D. C
w. ai.. KIRK, o F HAMILTON. culo.
Letters .Patent No. 82,328, y,dated September 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-BLOCKS.
tite .tlgehnle nimh tu in ttm wird atent mit `lurking; but at the same.
To ALL wHoM-IT MAY CONGERN;
Be it known that I, W. A. L. KIRK, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Block for Saw-Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
Figure l is a perspective view of a part of a saw-mill carriage, illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the indexroller.
Figure 3 isan end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for attachment to head-blocks, by means of which the eawyer may conveniently adjust the knee in such positions that a given number of pieces of a uniform width may ee cut from timber of a given thickness.
And it consists in the combination of a polygonal index-roller with the knee-guide and knee of the headblcck, as hereinafter more fully described.
. A is the carriage, B is theknee-guide, and C is the knee, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new.
D is a roller, which works in bearings attached to or formed upon the side of the guide or slidefB, upon which the knee C is moved back and forth in the ordinary manner. The 'roller D is made polygonal in form, each face or angle being divided up into equal spaces, and numbered from the position of the saw when making the cut to the other end of the said roller D. n spacing the roller, allowance is made for the kerf, so that when sawn, the lumberlmay all be of the desired thickness, and this thickness should be shown by figures placed at one or the other end of said scale.
For convenience in setting the knee accurately, it should be provided with an index or finger, E, pointing to the division-marks upon the index-roller D, as shown in iig. 1.
ln using-.the index-roller D, if it is desired to saw a stick of timber' of any desired thickness, the roller is turned so asto 1bring the proper scale upward, and it at once shows how many pieces the stick will make, and also serves as a guide in setting the knee B. In the sameway, if it is desired to cut a stick of timber into a given number of pieces, by turning the roller D, so as to bring the proper scale upward, it becomes an index for setting the knee, and at the same time shows what vthickness the said pieces will have. l
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The index-roller D, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the headblock B C of a saw-mill, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specication of my invention signed by me, this eleventh day of July, 1868.
W. A. L. KIRK.
