DOOR LATCH.
11 1 111011101: II'LED 110V. 28, 1910' Patented July 18, 1911.
n v nmussncnfismeq g gm g p p a door latch, of pensive construction that may be readilyv and easily applied to a door and door frameand that is so arranged that the handle porv tion will ban straight downwardly, in a Atlantic,
To all it my Be it known that I, DARIUS snnatronn, a citizenv ofthe United .States, residing at a specification.
The object of mv invention is to provide simple, durable and inexposition space apart from the door so that an operator may readily and easily grasp it; and also to provide a retaining member for theldoor frame'in which the retaining hook is close to'the door frameso that it will not obstruct the passageway through the door op ning and also to provide a latch devicein which the operatormay easily gras the handle frtion and then by one sing e i movement pullinglit toward him perform i the I double function of releasing the latch from the retaining member and opening the door;
and also. to provide a latch device which maybe operated from the inside of the door by simply pressing upon member and pushing it outwardly.
My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combina- .tion of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as
hereinafter .more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and'illustrated in the ac company'ingdrawings, in which:
Fi lfE-LSllOWSffi s deelevation of a door,
and, framehaving my improved latch device applied thereto. Fig. 2 shows a seetional view on the line 2- 2 of. Fig. 1,on an enlarged scale.- Fig.3 showsadetail, edge view j" of a-door frame having my improved latch device appliedthereto and shown in locked I POSIHOII,
146 device removed from the retaining member,
door, an vFig. 4 theline 4--4 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
drawin ;I have u the dotted 'linesgshowing the latch and the, arts in positionior opening-the s owe a sectional view'on Referrin totheaccompanyin 'thereferencenumera to in idate the door and 11 the door frame; The latch device com rises two'supportingbracketsfl, each of w ichislpreferablymade of a s1 a shank loop 13 and portion 14, which projects outwardly a considerable distance in the county of.Cass and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful DoorLatch, of which the fOlIOWIIIg IS at the end of sai the latch clined surface t strike 11 on the late device slightly enough to permit tended that is to. say, it will hold a 'unlatched and it wi nflepiece of sheet metal comprisihg a can- "room between. the h It from the base ofthe bracket so that the loop ortion .13 stands spaced apart from the oor to which thebase portion of thebracket is attached, .as clearly illustrated 2 and 4.
The latch proper is preferably iormed 0f a -smgle iece of metal rodhaving'two bean mg per ions 15 and 16 in line tvith each other and mounted in the loops 13. Between the loops 13 a handle portion'l'l is formed to hang straight downwardly. At Ionefend of the rod is a second handle portion ,18v projecting horizontally through a slot19 formed in the door. At the end of'the bearinglportion 16 the rod is provided with a crank wfl t n m- Patented'Jnly is, 19 1. a, v M Application and November 28,1010; Serial ll'o' lilllim arm 20 that extends inwardly toward". the y doorand on the end of the part; 20in an enwhich en aging portion is exten ed. 'arallel with ti p upturned end- 22.
The receiving member for thelatchis designed to'be attached to the doorfra ne and is formed with a base 23, flattopflportion 24:, an inclined portion 25-extending down- -ward1y from the outer end of the. art '24 and toward the door frame, and a s milderv y as a cent to the door. The part 21 ofthe latch i 'member is so arranged relativeto labelinat' when the fdoonis; closed osition the part 21Ri1l the inc ined portion '25. tilt;
26 at the rear of the inclined portion 'adja swung to a the'part 21 to pass in the rear'o the inclined portion and tolie againstthegshoulder26 as inexpensive and durable construction. ,iir-
gagingportionlll for the receivin member, e bearin portions ltiand lfiand v engagms p en; i a n thermore, it is eiiicient for all of thepu poses for which a device of thiskind ing door firmly a must beingv a i Y upturned end 22.. Furthermore; by having the dependinghandle 17 spaced apart from 1 also hold a sliding door against being nnlatched' on aceonntot the:
the doorand the part ilfpro'ected toward die and th A with the shoulder26 closet'o the door frame thus obviating. the objection oi having the ,jtions-in line with each other mounte in mally depending downwardly, a crank arm retaining member projecting a great distance from the doorfframe. Furthermore,
my improved latch device may be readily and easily operated ,from the inside of the a door by means of the extension handle 18. I claim as my invention: l
1. An improved door latch, comprising supporting means to be attached to a door and having bearings therein spaced apart from the parts of said supporting means that are designed 'to-engage said" door, a
.lateh member pivotally mounted in said bearings and comprising two journal oi said bearings, a handle between them noron one end of said latch member extended horizontally inward toward the door to which the latch device is attached, a part at' the inner endo'f said crank arm extended I "horizontallydparallel w ith the said journal members, an a retaining member having a shoulder on its under surface to be engaged bythe last mentioned part of the latch mem her.
that are designed to engage said door, alatch member pivotally mounted'in said bearings 4 and comprising two journal portions in line with each other mounted in said bearin s, a handle between them normally depen ing downwardly, a crank arm on one end of said latch member extended horizontally inward supportingimea ns tb lee attached to a door and having bearings therein spaced apart from, the. parts of said supporting means thatv are designed to engage said door, a latch member pivotally' mounted in said latch device is attached.
2. An improved door latch, comprising supporting meansto be attached to a door and having bearings thereinspaced apartfrom the parts of the said supporting means- 1 Witnesses bearings and comprising two journal por t-ions in line with each other mounted in said bearings, a handle between them normally depending downwardly; a crank arm on one "end of said latch member extended horizon- ,tally inward toward the door to which the latch device is attached, a part at the inner end of said crank arm extended horizontally parallel ,with the said journal members, a retaining member having a shoulder on its under surface to be engaged by the last men tioned partnf the latch member, and an extension on one end of the latch member designed to extend through a slot in said door toibe. grasped by an operator on the side of the door opposite from the side to which the 4. An improved latch, comprising two bearing members designed to be secured to 7 a door and'each having a shank toextend outwardly from the door and a 100 at the outer end of the shank spaced apart rom the door, a latch member formed of a single piece of metal rod and comprising two straight journal portions in line with each other, a handle member between the journal portions extended straight downwardly, an extension on one end of the latch member toproje'ctthrough said door so that it ma be grasped i by an operator on the side of the oor opposite the side to which the latch is attached,-a crank arm on the latch memberextended horizontally toward the door to which the latch is attached, an engaging member extended horizontally from the end of said crank arm signs to beattached to a door frame and having on itsunder surface an inclined pork tion extended downwardly and toward the? door frame, and a vertical shoulder at the lower end of said inclined portion, the space between the vertical shoulder and the door frame being onlysufiicient to receive'v the en gaging portion ofthejlatch member, substantially as and for thepurposes stated,
