DOOR LATCH Filed Feb. 16. 1927 I vPatented .lanQZO, 1931 I 'HARLsoN E. 130133, JR; or LuZ E RN IOWA- i I noonLA 'rcn Application filed February 16 1927.: serial-no. 168,561
Still a further object is to provide a latch j which, when applied to a sliding door, will have a tendency to engage more firmly in an I eye which is secured to the frame of the dooi n Still a further object'is to provide such a I latch which can be secured to the door in po sition to, move by gravity to a position where no parts of the device project beyond the edge of the door when the door is unlatched.
Still a further object is to provide means on the latch for utilizing a padlock for looking the latchagainstbeing opened. With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the I construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of mydevice, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more 1 fully set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of'the parts embodying my latch; V
Figure 2 is an elevation showing the latch attached to a door and in latched position. Figure 3 illustratesthe device applied to a door and in unlatched position; and a Figure' is an enlarged elevation of the vent the latch from being unlatched.
On the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a supporting bar. The supporting bar 10 is formed with a pair of openings 12 for the purpose of receiving screws orboltswhereby the supporting bar :is secured to a door ora door frame. I f 1 I Figure 2 illustrates thesupporting bar 10 secured to a door 14 by bolts 16. I
Pivotally mounted on the supporting bar 10 is a latch bar 18. The latchbar 18 is rotatably mounted on arivet or the like 20 which extends through both the supporting bar 10 and the latch bar 18. A washer 22 is device showingthe use. of a padlock to pre- 'ject to catching harness on horses as porting bar for the purpose of preventing anytbinding of the parts. It is, of.cour'se, understood that: the. rivet 20 is'riveted' sufficiently loose for the purpose of allowing ree pivotal movement of the latch bari'18 on the rivet 20. 1 1
The" latch 24,:the side 26 of which is: formed at anangle "relativeto, the bar 18. The purpose'of soforming the side 26 of-the notch 24 wi11 v.
hereinafter be more fully described; 1
The outer end oftheilatch' bar-1 interposed between the'latcli bar and the supi I 18 .is formed with a notch 8 is r narrower than the body portion thereofz-and l is bent ibaok'uponiitself for forminga handle member 28' The end 'isthen riveted to the".
body portion of thelatch bar 18 by meansof I a rivet 30 wherebyavery satisfactory handle is formed, p or s i A downwardly projecting, hook member 32 is formedtbeyond the notch '24-. The) hook member 32 is :provided with "an opening 3% 'for'receiving'a padlock. The hookmember 32 is designed to. en- '25 gage an eye member 36 which is substantially I angle shaped and is provided with openings 38; ,xThe' eye--member--36 is secured to the door frame; orv the door as v the casemay, be
through the '1 openings .38. The upper out- I wardlyproj'ecting"portion of the eye inemby'means ofkbolts orthelikellO extending l so ber 36 isformed. with a slot opening 42 for the purpose ofreceiving the hook member 7 32of'the latch bar 18.,'. I
The supportingbarxl0 and the eye member 36 are attached' ,to a" doorand frame 4 1' of. a barn or-ithe -like as clearly illustrated in 7 Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. It will bar 10 is be noted that the supporting spaced fromzthe edge of the door 14 so that when the. latch bar 18 is in unlatched position it will by gravity hang downwardly and i will not present any parts projecting beyond the edge ofthe door. This position is clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the'drawings.
The desirability of such construction lies in the fact that" any projecting parts are subthey pass into the barn or the like. a
1 The parts 10 and 36 ofcourse, may bereaka;
versed with the eye member 36 mounted on accidental 'unlatchingwof the :latch bar :18
the door Mand the latch bar 18 mounted-on the door frame 44. V In either case, the operation would be the same.
It will be noted that the slanting side 26 of the notch 24 when the hook member 32 is insertedthrough the opening 42 will have a tendency to pull the latch bar. 18 downwardly if the door 14 is moved away from the door frame 44 when the latch is This prevents any: possibility of the latch coming unlatched when an attempt is made to open the door withlatched position.
out unlatching it. t p 7 If desired a padlock 46 can be secured through the:opening. 31fofthe hook-anember 32 after the latch 18 has been =1noved to latched position. 7 this manner is clearly illustrated in Figure lof the drawings. 7
From the .ioregoing. descni :tion it is .obvious that I have provided a latch .which in normal unlatched position will not presentvany edgesoricornersto be caught oniobiects passing through the ibarn door .opening. .Means zhasfbeen provided to prevent from the eye member .3'6-when an attempt is madeto openthe door.
'Somerchanges may bemade in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, Without departing from the real spirit and :purposeof my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my :claim any modified'forms of structureor use of mechanicalequivalents, which may be reasonably included withintheir scope:
I I claim as my invention:
A door latch comprisingv a supporting bar, a latch bar of 'flatbar materialpivoted thereto, a notch insaid latch bar adjacent the end thereof, whereby a downwardly "extend.- ing' hook isiprovided, an eye-member for said hook, the side'o'f said notch farthest from the pivotal point of said latch bar being cut at an angle whereby .pnll on the latch bar tends to maintain the hook within said eye member and-a handle for said latchbar'bom prising a portion of the 'barbeyond saidhook redoubled upon andisecured to itself.
