LOCKING SPIGOT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOHN F. KOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vescosville, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Spigots, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in locking spigots, the object of the invent-ion being to provide a spigot which can be effectually locked with the plug valve in closed position, andprovide improved means for preventing the movement of the locking bolt.
A further object is to provide a lock for a spigot manipulated by a key to move the locking bolt to unlocked position, and provide an additional locking dog which is also operated by the key, and which serves as an additional lock to prevent movement of the locking bolt.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a broken plan view. Fig. 3, is a view in vertical section through the lock casing. Fig. 4, is a view in transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5, is a view of the key.
1, represents the spigot casing having an elongated conical screw-threaded shank 2 which is adapted to be secured in a barrel, keg, or other position where such a spigot is likely to be used.
3, is the turning plug secured in the casing by means of the ordinary nut 4, and operated by an arm or handle 5 to turn the plug to open or closed position, the plug being in closed position when the arm is turned at right angles to the casing, as shown in the drawing. On one side of the spigot casing 1, a lock casing is rigidly fixed in any approved manner. In this casing, a vertically disposed locking bolt 7 is located and is provided at its upper end with a lug 8 adapted to project into a recess 9 in a tongue 10, projecting radially from the plug 3 and lock the plug against turning movement. On the lower end of this locking bolt 7, a pin 11 is secured, and on this pin a coiled spring 12 is located bearing at one end against the bottom of the lock casing 6, and at its upper end against bolt 7, normally holding the bolt in its locking position. This bolt is guided in its movement, and held against displacement by means of a pin 13 secured to the casing, and projecting through an elongated slot 14 in bolt 7.
To move the bolt to unlocked position, a key 15 is provided, adapted to be projected through a keyhole 16 in casing 6, and preferably of the t-ubular kind to receive a post 17 in the casing. Bolt 7 is recessed as shown at 18 to receive the key and allow the key to force the bolt downwardly when turned in the proper direction. To prevent this operation of the bolt 7 by a key 15, a dog 19 is provided and has rotary mounting in t-he casing, projects through the casing, and is provided in its outer end with a screw-driver receiving groove 20, giving to the dog the appearance of the head of a screw. This dog, however, is provided with a prong 21 adapted to enter a notch 22 in bolt-'7 when the latter is in its locked position, and securely hold the bolt in this locked position. A flange 23 is provided on the end of key 15 adapted to enter groove 20 to turn the dog to locked or unlocked position.
The operation is therefore as follows: l.Vith the parts as shown in Fig. 3,the spigot is securely locked, the bolt 7 is held against movement by means of the dog 19, and to anyone unfamiliar with the lock, it would be practically impossible to open the same, because the dog 19 looks merely like a screw head. To open the spigot, the flanged end of key 15 is positioned in groove 20, and dog 19 turned to move the prong 21 out of notch 22. The other end of the key 15 is then inserted through the keyhole 16, and when turned will draw the bolt 7 downward out of the tongue 10, permitting the plug 3 to be turned to open position. The sides of tongue 10 are beveled as shown at 24, so that if the bolt 7 is permitted to spring upward, the plug may be turned and locked.
Various slight changes might be made in the-general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to. the precise details set forth, but consider myseltl at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope ot the appended claims.

2. The combination ivith a spigot, a turning plug therein, a handle projecting at right angles to the plug and a tongue on the opposite side ot' the plug to the point of connection ot said handle, said tongue having a recess in its under tace, ot' a lock casing fixed to the side ot' the spigot casing, an upwardly spring pressed bolt in said lock casing :ulapted to project into the recess in the tongue, and means for locking said bolt against downward movement, substantially as described.
