Be it known that we, THOMAS C. JENSEN and .IonGnN C. JoRGENsnN, citizens of the United States, residing at Ephraim, in the county of Sanpete and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to improvements 1n combination locks.
One object of the invention is to provide a combination lock having a simple and etticient construction and arrangement of locking and releasing mechanism whereby the fastening bolts, when projected, will be securely held in locked position and may be quickly and easily released and retracted when the combination is known.
`With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a safe showing the application of the invention thereto. F ig. 2 is an inside view of the lock with the inner casing removed and showing the parts in locked position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in released position. Fig. 4l is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings l denotes the casing of our improved lock, said casing being arrangedon the inner side and extending across the width of the door to which the lock is applied. In one end of the casing is formed passages 2 through which project the ends of sta tionary fastening bolts 3 which, when the doer is in closed position, are adapted to engage notches or recesses 4l formed in the door casing. In the opposite end of the casing are formed passages 5 through which are adapted to operate the movable locking bolts 6. The bolts 6 have their inner ends reduced to form stems 7, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The reduced ends or stems 7 of the bolts provide inclined or angular shoulders 8 on the opposite sides of the bolts as shown.

The bolts 6 are provided with operating knobs 9 arranged on the outer side of the door to which the lock is applied, said knobs having reduced shanks 10 which pass through slots or elongated apertures 11 formed in the door and are rigidly secured attheir inner ends to the bolts as shown. On the outer side of the door over the stationary bolts 3 are arranged two or more knobs 12 which are revolubly secured to the door and form blinds or ornaments to make the lock appear more complicated.
Arranged on the inner side of the door casing, adjacent the inner ends of the stems 7 of the bolts 6, are detente which are con structed in the form of circular tumblers 13 each having a bolt releasing notch 141 in its edge, which, when the disks are turned to the proper position, are engaged by the inner reduced ends or stems 7 of the bolts thereby permitting said bolts to be retracted. IVhen the bolts will be held in a projected position turned to bringthe notches 14 out of engagement or alinement with the stems 7, the bolts will be held in a projected position and cannot be retracted until the tumblers are again turned to bring the notches l opposite to the stems. The tumblers 13 are provided with reduced Shanks 15 which are revolubly mounted in the door and have on their outer ends operating knobs 1G by means of which the tumblers are operated. In addition to the detents 13, we also pref` erably provide a sliding detent 17 which is in the form of a triangular plate having a longitudinally extending stem 18 projecting from one corner thereof and diagonally arranged stop fingers 19 which project from the opposite corners thereof and are adapted to engage the inner angular shoulders 8 of the bolts when the latter are in a projected or locked position, thereby forming an addition al fastening means for the bolts. The detent 17 is provided with an operating knob 20 having a stem which projects and operates through a slot 21 formed in the door and is rigidly secured at its inner end to the detent 17 as shown.
Arranged on the inner side of the casing adjacentto the end of the stem l18 of the detent, is a locking tumbler 22 having formed therein a releasing notch 23 which, when the tumbler 22 is turned in the proper position, is adapted to receive the outer end of the stem 18 and thus permit the retract-ion of the detent 17. lhen the tumbler is turned to bring the notch 23 out of engagement or alinement with the stein 18 the detent 1.7 will be held in an operative position. The tumbler 22 is provided with a shank 24 which projects through and is revolubly mounted in the cover of the door and has arranged on its outer end an operating knob 25 by means of which the tumbler 22 is turned to its locking and releasing position.
By providing the detent 17 in addition to the rotary tumblers 13, said elements will form a double locking mechanism for the bolts when in a projected position. It is obvious however, that either the tumblers 13 or the detent 17 may be omitted and an effectual combination fastening mechanism still provided for the bolts. The employment of the two tumblers and the locking mechanism for the sliding detent provides a locking mechanism, the operation of which, is very difficult unless the combination is understood. i
The operating knobs in the various devices are all alike, thus increasing the confusion of any one not knowing the location or the manner of operating the same.
Our improved locking device may be einployed in connection with safe doors or any other form of doors to which a combination lock may be applied and said lock may have attached thereto any suitable form of burglar alarm not shown.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation o-f the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
lVhat we claim is:
1. The combination of a casing, a series of bolts slidably mounted therein and arranged to project through one side thereof, means to pro-ject and retract said bolts, reduced stems formed on the inner ends of said bolts, rotary tumblers arranged in the casing and having notches adapted to receive the reduc-ed stems of the bolts whereby the latter may be retracted, a sliding detent arranged between and engaging said bolts to hold the same in locked position, means to operate said detent, a tumbler having a notch to receivethe inner endiof the sliding detent whereby the latter may be disengaged from the bolts, and means to operate said tumbler.
2. The combination of a casing, a series of stationary bolts projecting from one end of said casing, a series of slidable bolts ar'- ranged in the opposite end of the casing, operating knobs connected respectively with said stationary and sliding bolts and extending through the casing, reduced stems on said sliding bolts forming lateral stop sho-ulders, a slidably mounted detent arranged between tlie sliding' bolts, an operating knob 70 secured thereto and extending through the casing, stop fingers formed on said detent and adapted to engage the stop shoulders on the sliding bolts, a reduced stem formed on said sliding detent, notched tumblers revolubly mounted in the casing in position to receive the stems of the sliding detent and the sliding bolts respectively, and operating knobs secured to said tumblers and extending through the casing.
3. The combination of a casing, stationary bolts mounted in and projecting from one end thereof, knobs rotatably fitted in said bolts and projecting through the casing, sliding bolts mounted in the opposite end of the casing and projecting therethrough, knobs secured to said bolts and projecting through the casing, tumblers adapted to hold the sliding bolts projected, and knobs secured to all of said tumblers and projecting through the casing.
4L. The combination of a casing, slidable bolts mounted in and projecting through one end of the casing and having lateral shoulders and reduced stems at their inner ends, a slidable detent mounted in the casing between the sliding bolts and having divergent arms engaging the lateral shoulders thereon and a stem projecting from said divergent arms, notched tumblers rotatably mounted in the casing in position to be engaged by the stems of said bolts and detent respectively, and knobs on the outside of the casing connect-ed with the bolts, the detent, and the tumblers respectively.
