EDWIN F. HUJBERT, OF SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
DISPLAY-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application led September 1, 1908. Serial No. 451,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. HULBERT, citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved display carrier for use in connection with oysters or similar products, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a carrier of this character which can be readily maintained in a clean and sanitary condition and will display the oysters in an appetizing manner.
The invention further contemplates a simple and inexpensive display carrier which can be packed with ice so as to retain the oysters in perfect condition and which is so designed as to enable quick access to be had thereto when desired.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a display carrier embodying the invention, portions being broken away and shown in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on line 2v2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a portion of the-carrier; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through one corner of the carrier.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the outer casing which may be formed of wood or other suitable material and which is provided at its opposite ends with the handles 2 by means of which the carrier may be readily lifted and moved from place to place. The interior of the casing is rendered water-tight by a lining of sheet metal 3, while the exterior of thecasing is covered by plates 4 which preferably have a porcelain finish so as to be readily cleaned. Arranged within the casing 1 is a pair of receptacles 5 adapted to receive the oysters, the said receptacles resting upon a frame 6 by means of which they are maintained in proper position within the casing and held spaced from the bottom thereof. rl"he upper ends of these receptacles 5 are arranged immediately under openings 7 in a top 8 which is removably applied to the casing, the edge of the top being formed with the downwardly extending flanges 8 which engage the sides and ends of the casing to hold the top properly positioned thereon, while the openings 7 are surrounded by the flanges Ta which project within the mouths of the receptacles. A cover 9 is provided for the openings 7 and this cover is preferably of a transparent formation, boing shown in the present instance as constituted by a piece of plate glass. One edge of the glass cover is engaged by a pair of tft-shaped clips 10 which also fit around a rod 11 the opposite extremities of which are journaled in the heads of bolts 12 extending through the top 8. A cushioning layer 13 is interposed between the arms of each clip and the glass to prevent injury to the latter and the arms of the clip are connected by a screw le which causes the clip to firmly engage both the glass cover and the rod 11. A, depression 15 is formed in the top 8 immediately under the swinging edge of the cover to admit of a finger hold being readily obtained thereon for the purpose of swinging the cover upwardly when it is desired to obtain access to the receptacles For the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of the cover a stop arm 1G is bolted to the top 8 and the extremity of this stop arm is provided with a buffer 17 for engagement with the glass to prevent scratching .thereof `With this construction it will be obvious that the cover can be quickly thrown either into an open or a closed position and owing to the fact that the clips 10 firmly engage the rod 11 as well as the cover the latter is prevented from shifting longitudinally.` In the use of the device, the space within the outer casing around the receptacles is designed to be packed with ice, a drain cock 18 being provided for withdrawing the water from the casing after the ice has melted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A receptacle comprising a body portion formed with an opening in its top, a rod extending across the upper face of the top in spaced relation thereto, bolts passing through the top, the opposite extremities of the rod being ournaled in the heads of said bolts and the bolts holding the rod in ele together, whereby to bind the clip arms to 10 vated position relative to the top, a lid the top and on the rod, substantially as deadapted to close the top opening, clips elnscribed.
