Be it known that l, Enno Riorrnnnsou, citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers, of which the following is a specification.

Vegetables, meats and like food stuffs, when pickled, are required to be covered by the brine or liquor, this being usually accomplished by means of a board upon which a weight is placed, or by means of a weight of sufficient dimensions beneath the brine. When it is required to remove the food stuff, considerable difficulty is experienced in the manipulation of the weight and particularly is this the case in stores where the pickled food stuff is kept on sale.

The present invention provides a cover which automatically adapts itself to the change of level of the food stuff as the saine is removed from time to time from the vessel, barrel or other container, said cover being provided with a door which may be opened to admit of removal of the food stuff when required, thereby avoiding the necessity for removal of the cover or weight.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

It is proposed to secure the cover l so as to prevent upward movement thereof by any swelling or buoyancy of the food stuff rel quired to be kept under brine or liquor. For j this purpose securing means are located about the edge of the cover, and are adapted to engage with the inner sides of the barrel 2 or other vessel or container. The securing means may be of such construction as either to be automatic in operation or to be moved by hand. The securing means, as shown in F ig. l, may be used separately or jointly, the one supplementing the action of the other. In one form of securing means, brackets 6 project upward from the cover l at diametrically opposite points and pins 7 are threaded into lateral openings formed in the vertical members of said brackets, their outer ends being pointed and their inner ends being provided with thumb pieces 8. When the cover is pressed down upon the food stuff in the barrel or vessel 2, it is secured by turning the pins 7 to bring their pointed ends into contact with the sides of the said barrel. The automatic securing means consist of brackets 9 secured to the cover l at opposite points midway between the brackets and having' ears l() and stops ll. Pointed dogs 12 are pivoted to the ears l() of the brackets and their outer ends are adapted to engage with the inner sides of the barrel 2. The dogs l2 normally incline to the perpendicular, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1, hence as the cover 1 is pressed downward, the outer ends of the dogs 12 ride upon the inner sides ofthe barrel 2, and any upward tendency of the cover causes the points of the dogs l2 to enter the sides of the barrel and hold the cover in place. The action of the dogs l2 may be l supplemented by causing the pins 7 to engage with the inner sides of the barrel, as will be readily understood.
