BUNG FOR THE PRESERVATION 0F BEER. No. 277.960.
Patented May 22,1883.
N. PETERS. Molilhographo vimm. n 1;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY THEILMA N, OF CINCINNATI, 0-1110.
BUNG FOR "THE PRESERVATIONOF BEER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-277,960, dated May 22, 18 83.
Application filed October 18, 1882 (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY THEILMANN, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bungs'for the Preservation of Beer, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Figs. 3 and 4., details.
The object of my invention is the preservation of beer by preventing or regulating the escape of carbonic acid, by the combination in a hung, of a ring covered with flannel or cloth f, being covered with a perforated pewter cap, 0, and set inside the hungover a cylindrical aperture, A, cut through the bung vertically, the top of the bun g being covered by an annular cap of zinc, D, embracing the upper edge of the bung, and closed with a hinged lid, E, as shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
The bung, Fig. 1, is to be made of locust, black walnut, or any suitable hard wood, having a central circular aperture, A, enlarged near the top of the bung, with a set-01f, B, for the purpose of placing a ring, f, and perforated pewter lid 0 thereon. Over the said ring there is to be placedapiece'of flannel or cloth, which is then fastened down by the lid attached to it being shut down over it. The bun g is covered at the top by an annular zinc cap, D, embracing the upper edge of the bung, and closed with a hinged lid of zinc, E, over the annular cap, so that the lid may be opened to any extent or completely closed.
The construction is illustrated more in detail by the various figures: Fig. 2, a vertical view of the bung, showing the cylindrical aperture A through the bung, and the ring covered with flannel or cloth, and the annular zinc cap D, and lid thereon, E, each in position; Fig 3, a. view of the annular cap D and lid E; and Fig. 4, a view of ring covered with flannel or cloth F, together with the perforated pewterlid G, hinged on the covered ring f.
The flannel or cloth over the ring, covered by the perforated lid of pewter O, prevents the escape of carbonic acid, and, in connection with the lid E upon the bung, allows sufficient air to enter so as to permit the beer to run off freely at the faucet, and to preserve the beer for a long time in good condition, the lid on the bung to be kept closed when the beer is not to be drawnoff for some time.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a hung, substantially as described, of a ring covered with flannel or cloth, and covered by a perforated pewter lid, the whole placed In the bung, as above described.
HENRY THEILMANN.
