SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,950, dated August 30, 1904.

Be it known that I, FRED P. PURDY, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being' had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in jar-covers; and the object of my invention is to produce a hinged cover which may be easily attached to jars for holding pickles and similar articles and constructed in a manner to effect an air-tight closure when the cover has been closed down and to so construct the cover and attaching-rim that the former when closed will be automatically locked against casual or accidental opening bythe suction formed by the cover resting upon the rubber attached to the metallic rim, which is a part of the frame of the jar-cover, but will be capable of being readily lifted when it is desired to gain access to the contents of the jar, this jarcover being particularlyT adapted for pickle-jars to prevent flies and other bugs from entering into the pickle liquid vand a cover which will not accidently become detached from the jar.
The invention consists in the combination of elements and in certain parts of construction entailed in the combination of said elements to obtain the desired result.
A full understanding .of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a preferred construction embodying the various features of the invention, and such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, and attain my object by the mechanism there illustrated, showing such preferred construction, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In said drawings, Figure l isa plan view of the cover with a portion broken away showing part of the jar. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the invention, showing the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lock. Fig. a is an elevation of the hinge. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a portion of the jar and cover with the cover closed.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My invention consists of a jar-cover hinged to a metallic or other suitable clamping or screwing device and adapted to be applied to the jar a, which may be of glass, porcelain, or other suitable material. -The jar e forms no part of the present invention; but my device is particularly adapted to be attached to the glass jars a, .having the annular beads or ribs b, which are now in common use in stores for holding and displaying pickles, pickle-limes, &c. It is necessary thatthe top of the jar be made of considerable thickness; otherwise the cover could not be properly attached, and to this rib b is fastened the metallic rim or ring (Z, which is made of sufcient size and shape so as to slip upon the rib b, and it extends nearly around the upper side of this rib of the jar; but its two ends are not connected at the point r/ in the rear portion of the jar except by the clamping screw or bolt L.
Upon the enlarged portion or rib is stretched a band of thin rubber or other suitable material c, which allows the metallic rim Z to be tightened upon the jar without injury to the glass. The rubber c extends above the rim d, and the stretching process brings the protecting' part of the rubber fiat and extending inward toward the center of the jar. The weight of thecover when closed forces down the protecting edge of the rubber c, thus producing the desired suction. The rubber cloth or other material c extends partly beyond the rim d toward the center of the jar, forming a flat ledge or depending inwardly-inclined annular flange, as shown in the lower part of Fig. 6, and is so arranged as to suck down or hold the cover or lid e against accidental displacement, the cover e being preferably vmade of indurated wood fiber or pressed paper and concaved, having at its outer ed ge the up- IOO ward and outward extending' rim d, so that when the cover is' dropped or let down upon the projecting' rubber band it presses it down, as shown in Fig. 5, to such a position that it forms an air-tight fitting, and a suction is caused thereby, so that some slig'ht force is required to lift the cover e from the rubber c, and for this purpose a handle p is attached to the upper portion of the cover, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The cover e is preferably locked against the rim Z by a lock s, attached to the eoncaved part of the cover e by a screw t and to the rim c by a rivet q, and is provided with a hing'ed portion fr, having' the arms /r/ for fastening or clamping to the under side of the metallic rim d, which rim is preferably made of' aluminiuln.
rlhe rubber c extends entirely around the rib 7) of the jar,'so that it has to be stretched around it, and if made of the proper size the inner portion will raise up, as shown in Fig. 6, when the cover of the jar is raised from the jar itself. The rim Z does not extend entirely around the jar; but a portion is cut away, as shown at (y, at the rear of the jar and diametrically opposite the hinge s, and in this space g is attached the hinges of the cover. As there is always a variation in the size of glass vessels, it is necessary to have two hinges, and this overcomes the variation, as the rim (Z has to be tightened and the cover put in its proper position before the bolt or rivet holes are bored in the cover. I
The rim d has at each of its ends outwardextending projections or arms f f, through which are inserted a bolt t, which bolt has a screw-head 1 and is provided with a nut j, and as it is screwed up upon the bolt /L it tightens the rim d against the rubber c and upon the rib of the jar a, as shown in Fig. 4. Upon this bolt are pivoted arms i e', which extend upward and then at right angles inward and are attached to the rim e of the cover e by the rivets m and to the cover e by the bolts m. The arms f are cut away, as shown in Fig. 2, forming seats o, against which the shoulders f of the arms rest when the cover e is raised, thus holding the cover in an upright position and preventing it from falling too far back.
Having' thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A jar-cover consisting of an outwardlyconvexed metallic strip having arms at each of its ends, tightening means connecting the arms, hinges pivoted to the tightening' means,
and a cover attached to the hinges, substantially as shown and described.
2. A. jar-cover comprising a cover, a rim, a rubber band held within the rim and having an inwardly-extending upper edge, a bolt for tightening the rim upon the jar, a hinge pivoted to the bolt and having its leaf secured to the cover, all substantially as shown and described.
3. A jar-cover in combination with a jar having an enlarged rib, a rim extending nearly around the periphery of the jar and having outward-extending fianges at each end, a bolt connecting the flanges for securing' the rim against the rib, a cover, a hinge secured to the cover and pivoted on the bolt, and a strip of' elastic material inserted between the rim and rib and having a portion thereof extending within the jar, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a jar-cover in combination with ajar, a rubber band encircling the upper outer part of the jar, a metallic fastening encircling the band but having an opening in its rear portion, a hinge attached to each end portion, adjusting' means connecting the hinges, a cover attached to the leaf of the hinges, and locking means attached to the cover for locking the cover against the rubber band, substantially as shown and described.
5. A jar-cover consisting of a cover, a rim for securing the cover to a jar and having outwardly-extending flanges, each flange being' provided with a seat, a bolt connecting' the flanges for tightening the rim against the jar, hinges pivoted on the bolt and having' shoulders for resting upon said seats and holding the cover in an uprig'ht position when raised, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a jar-cover in combination with a jar having' an enlarged rib, a metallic strip extending nearly around the rib and having at each of' its ends outwardly-extending arms, each arm having' an enlarged part, means connecting the arms for tightening the strip against the rib, a cover, hinges attached to the cover and pivoted on the tightening means, and the hinges arranged to come in contact with the enlarged part of' the arms on the backward movement of the cover substantially as and for the purposes specified.
