BARREL.
Specification of Letters atent. Patented July 1l, 1911.
Application filed March 12, 1910. Serial No. 548,908.
To allA whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. HERR, a
vcitizen of' the United States of America,
residing at Detroit, in the county of 1Wayne 'and State ofMichigamhave invented certaln new anduseful Improvements in Barrels, of.\vl1ich the following is a specification, reference being hadI therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
The Vinvention relates to barrels or packs ages, and is more particularly designed for use in connection with that type in which the body is formed of paper or other liber.
The invention consists in the construction of' head andA chime hoop'for securing the same'to' the body of. the package, asmore fully hereinafter set forth.
In-the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view 4of the hoop; Fig. 2 is a section of a portion ofthe head of the barrel showing v the manner of securing the same; and Fig.
' is provided with croze C.
D is .a metallic hoopwhich is adapted to .fit withinl the body of the barrel and is'pro- F with a return-bent vided with. a grooved portion E for engaging the croze C. .The hoop D is also preferably provided with an end flanged portion ortion G for fitting over the endof the cy lndrical body.
The head is secured to the body by nails H, which are driven through the latter and f ties are experienced in always properly directing the nail, particularly as ,the metal" of the hoop`will frequently deflect the poi-nt and change its original direction.
therefore, ydevised a constructionin which the nails are invariably directed into the head so asV to firmly engage 'the saine even where not properly directed initially. This result is attained by forming the hoop D with a Vshaped groove I therein, the apex of which overlies the periphery of the head.
I have,
The inclined sides of this grooved portion of the hoop form deiiecting surfaces which will direct the point 'of the nail toward the apex of the groove,'and thus after penetrating the hoop the nail enters the peripheral portion of the head.
To coperate with the hoop just described, the 'head B is formed so thatthe apex of the groove in the hoop will fall within the edge of the periphery. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the head is formed with a groove J adjacent'to the croze portion C and in the construction shown in Fig. 3 the croze is merely arranged sufficiently at one side of the center of the head to leave a projecting shoulder portion K. Vith both construe-- tions, thenail which is first directed by the V-groove in the hoop to the apex will enter into the periphery of the head, and -will be directed toward the central portion thereof.. i
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In a package, the combination, with a body, ofa head having a croze with a peripheral portion adjacent vto saidcro'ze, a hoop fitting within'sa'id body, having'a grooved portionfor engaging the croze of said head,-
and a reverse groove with its apex directed inward and overlying the peri heral portionl of the head adjacent to said) croz, and securing means passing through said body and the apex of said reverse groove'into the peripher'y''of the head. .n
2. In a package, the combination with a body, of a head provided witha croze and having a peripheral portion adjacent 5to said croze, a hoop fitted within ,the body having a V-shaped groove with its apex di rected inward and overlying the peripheral portion of the head,' and securing means passing through the body and the apex of;
the V-shaped groove into theA peripheral portion of the head.'
